Brother Jimmy's..... enough said.
Brother Jimmy's... Not to mention that one of the managers, Jesse Cody, was quite a runner himself-- former FL finalist.

My god, how white are you? Edgar Winter white?? And you've never, ever had real barbecue, admit it.

What exactly is that supposed to mean? Is there something wrong or illegal about being white? I've been to Brother Jimmy's and the barbecue is excellant. I'd put my barbecue skills up against your's any day of the week.

There is another place you gotta check out. It is called
The Tranny Tavern. Lots of hot ladies there. Have a few beers before you go and I am sure that you will have a
great time!
Yeah.....You got a problem with that Big Boy?? Come on down and I will show you the best of both worlds!

I think nyc means any place where patrons aren't dressed exactly the same in black and the same goofy eyeglasses while listening to annoying garage music.
thank god you WERE a good runner, because based on all of your posts, you appear to be one of the biggest losers of all time.

I'll pass on that offer. I'm a decent cook for some things and grill a mean steak, but my "barbecue skills" are minimal. I would however be delighted to engage you, in grand letsrun tradition, in a spirited contest of spelling and grammar.
And no, lack of pigmentation is not a moral or legal crime. I'm just saying, I wouldn't question Cheech and Chong about the finer points of string theory, I wouldn't look to Al Sharpton for guidance on whether I can go for a run in public in tights with or without shorts, I wouldn't ask John Rocker in which Queens neighborhoods I might want to look at apartments, and I wouldn't trust barbecue recommendation from someone who considers Brother Jimmy's the BBQ pinnacle, even by lackluster NYC standards.
To the OP, or whomever: if you're especially into food, you're coming to a great city for it. You can find lots of exceptionally good chow in this town, of almost every type and ethnicity, and often cheap too. But don't come here for the BBQ. It's not our strong suit. If you're already here and you just gotta, a decent unpretentious non-gimmicky bet is BarBQ on 6th Ave and 20th St in Brooklyn, right near big ol' Greenwood Cemetery. In Manhattan, R.U.B. or Daisy May's might be worthwhile but I can't vouch.
But really, consider two of BBQ's cousins which *are* great here. Pastrami: Katz's Deli. You absolutely should go to Katz's (have what she's having), then hit a few bars on the Lower East Side. And jerk chicken: if you know someone with a car, cruise down Nostrand or Utica Avenues in Brooklyn with your windows open and follow your nose.
Thanks for all the help from all the serious posters. Yeah I'm not too worried about checking out the barbecue scene seeing as I go to school in the south but I am definitely excited to get some good bagels and pizza finally. I lived right outside NYC for a long time as a kid so I'm definitely familiar with all the foods the city has to offer, just was a little too young to experience the nightlife, thus my lack of knowledge on that subject. Thanks again for all the suggestions though.
One, there are plently of non-white people in Brother Jimmy's especially the later you go on the weekend.
Two, I am from the South, i knoww good BBQ.
Three, I wasn't suggesting it for its food, i was suggesting it b/c it has cheap drinks, fun atmosphere, and the bartenders, including Jesse, are all very cool.
Which Brother Jimmy's has the manager/bartender who used to be a footlocker finalist?
Jesse is now on the east side-- I think lower 70's and 2nd?
One, there are plently of non-white people in Brother Jimmy's
"Oooh, I saw some actual black people in that place, so you know it *must* be the real deal!"
Lemme tell ya: in my Brooklyn neighborhood I'm in a white minority. And Dallas BBQ is exceedingly popular with locals, many of whom are originally from points south, especially North Carolina (doing a reverse Michael Jordan, who was born here and moved there) and Georgia. And it is just gawd-awful.
You also may have noticed that chains like MacDonald's, and one step up on the food chain, Friday's and Olive Garden, do lots of business. Popularity does not equal quality. Most "runners" top out under 20 miles a week and, when they race, are proud to finish a 5k. More Americans know and are awed by Karno than any other runner in this country. They've never heard of Hall or Keflezighi or Webb, just as many haven't heard of BarBQ or Daisy May's. Or an old favorite way, way the hell out at the end of Queens, Pooor [sic] Freddy's.
Coogan's Bar- is out the back of the armory- best place the world for a post race beer! see you at the bar win or lose!
cheers jt
You should be serious about running and not go out after your race. Wait until you are done w/ college and have more money. A night out in NYC is like Jim Cramer - MAD MONEY.
I was just about to book a trip to NYC and came across this thread. i'm going in march - will be getting in by train at about 10 on saturday night and i'm debating whether to fly out monday night or tuesday night.
Obviously tues night i would get to see more, but i'm travelling solo (i may be "that strange dude at the bar by himself") and i have a job (another vaction day burned).
I was just wondering if you guys think it's worth staying another day and night or if I could hit most of the stuff that there is to do there for a 25 yo single guy solo in 2 nights and 2 days. I'll be planning on having a few beers at the local bar or wahtever at night, but probably not going to clubs or lounges, etc if i'm by myself.
cheers
Letsrun is an OK place to find opinions on NYC nightlife, better places are:
I grew up in the city so I know a few things about this topic. As college guys your buddies and you would probably feel at home at some of the NYU bars in the West Village as one of the previous posters recommended. There are tons of good looking chicks and the scene is not pretentious at all. Another solid recommendation for you guys in my opinion was Brother Jimmy's on the Upper East Side. The Murray Hill bars on 3rd Ave in the 30's are decent but the crowd is in their mid to late 20's and are too "worldy" to get blind drunk and have a good time. If you're into the punk scene and want cheap beer check out the East Village dives. I don't have recommendations in that dept. b/c I don't go to those places. McSorleys is a bit touristy but the beer tastes great and it's an historical landmark. They only serve two kinds of beer, light and dark, and you have to order two mugs at once. Another place people are going these days is the Brooklyn Brewery. The beer there is almost double the alcohol content of regular beer and the atmosphere is laid back and fun. If you really want to have a good time though, hit up your old man for some "book money" and check out Scores.
As for things you must do, if you like pizza any corner pizza place will do but if you really want the best pizza in NY go to a brick oven place like Patsy's or Totonno's. They have multiple locations throughout the city, just google them to see where.
Have fun and be safe. Walk with purpose everywhere you go.
