What I'm not hearing in all this insanity is this....I actually feel bad for the kid. If it's not one thing sucking (his season), it's another. Hope he heals up and gets his act together.

Great! Couldn't have come at a better time!
Webb is out? Out of WHAT? Some of the posters on this thread seem to think that Webb was going to go tear it up on the European circuit or something. We are already into July, so he, along with most other American runners who didn't make the WC team are about done for the summer. I am not decrying the state of American distance running here - that is just the way it is. So, this ailment came at a great time for Webb, since he was probably going to take it easy for a bit and wind down from his season anyway.
It's Warthurts fault. If he had just kept his mouth shut, Webb would be fine. But no, he had to blast the kid in the press while he was going through a tough time on the track.
Enough to give anyone a burst appendix.
Your appendix is a little appendage that is attached to your digestive tract. its a vestigal organ, a holdover from when we ate a lot more roughage, i.e. raw plant material or grass to you and me...and it was used to help digestion.
The human appendix is full of bacteria used for digestion, occasionally it gets infected and the bacteria go nuts. If its not removed before it bursts blood poisoning is a real possibility and death is almost certain if treatment is not swift.
The process to remove an inflamed appendix is much less invasive and can be done nowadays with a 2-3 inch incision and a night in the hospital.
If Webb's appendix burst he's a lucky man he got to a hospital in time.
I say someone write a book about Webb's appendix bursting and call it ....????????
"He was planning on racing some in Europe," Flynn said, emphasizing that the
competitions wouldn't be at the IAAF Golden League or Grand Prix level
which might be too pressure-filled.
Yeah, sure he was. "...too pressure-filled", how about not good enough to get in. Webb would be lucky to get a hip number at a GP II meet. C'mon, who is this guy kidding?
Title: "Burst of Pressure" by Chris Lear. Order today.
Flynn's comment probably said more than he intended. For Webb, at least until he's so out of the picture that there are 30 USA milers faster than him, the pressure is always going to be there. Ran than run from it, maybe he ought to buckle up his chin strap a little tighter. I hope Webb's situation will discourage any future college freshmen from turning pro, because this is looking bad folks.
Flynn's comment about Webb running cross-country was also perplexing. Yeah, he might show up at nationals capable of a top 10 finish in short course, but running with a college team would have so much more of a benefit. Much more fun too!

dalpaiz had a burst appendix. i remember him saying it was very tough to come back from and that it sapped a lot of his energy. perhaps this could explain webb's poor performances? i don't know how long something like appendicitis can go uncheched before the appendix bursts though. anyone?
I remember reading in a book about Jim Ryun that mentioned him having a burst appendix. Happened I think in high school during a freakin XC meet. McMullen's toe, Holman's "head case" problem, Ryun and Webb's appendix...what's up with you milers?

16x, I like that!
Now we've had both of the schoolboy wonders, Ritz and AWebb, suffer some physical problems serious enough to cost them some down time. Shit happens. Both should recover and do just fine soon.
An update on the '01 Footlocker cross champ, Tim Moore: he had a good season at Notre Dame and is now working w/me part-time and running the same trails I mtn bike on. One of the trails is a little over 9 miles and the other just over 6 miles. He's healthy and enjoying the variety.
Good job. There you are with an excuse like all good little Webb sheep. "BAAAAAAAH"

And athletes go on to full seasons after either appendicitis or a burst appendix. Jennings, Julia Stamps, Joan Samuelson all continued with seasons after the procedure.
That's 'cause women are WAY tougher than men... ;-)
Interesting Webb newbit notwithstanding, it's very lame that someone would post up a copyrighted story in its entirety on a public board.
Lycurgus wrote:This goes a long way in explaining his relatively poor performance this year. His appendix has probably been inflamed for months which would induce a general overall weakness. The inflamation could have been caused by a digestive viral infection or blockage. Incidently one symptom is weight loss which could explain what others have observed about Webb this year, his gaunt look compared to High School. No doubt some psychological stress didn't help either. Obviously what he needs now is a summer of rest and recovery, not hard work as he declared a couple of weeks ago. That would be impossible and counter productive now.
I thought EXACTLY the same thing. An appendix doesn't just burst without a serious underlying infection.
Remember something else about the Coe analogy. In '83, he pulled out the inagural WC's because of poor performance later found to be caused by the health problem. He we blasted in the British press as a has-been and a wuss for not facing the competition, criticism which he answered very nicely with about 300 to go in LA.
Wonder what Mr. Webb's response will be?
