bget, where did you go to high school? I also ran in section 4 against Karl. I ran for Union-Endicott and graduated in 1993.

Hey hey hey section 4 runners! I was a section 4 runner also and probably competed with you. Had a big rivalry in '93 with the Sydney 4x800 team indoor and outdoor track seasons and Piranya was the anchor.
I ran for the mighty Horseheads High School. Heh.
yeah that doesn't sound like karl to me...seriously, he is a good guy...maybe aloof is the right word? definitely not arrogant tho'
I'll vouch for the Haverford wackos...if you steal their paper cutout goat, they'll kill ya
Not only will we kill you for stealing our two dimensional goat, we'll kill you for thinking about stealing it. Folks, Bernard Muller can read minds, and he's got at least 3 more years at Haverford, not including his coaching stint that shall begin the day Tom dies (may many eons pass before this happens). As the chip on Bernie's shoulder grows, so does his blood lust.
never forget the time when some of d'son's awful runners took the goat from some of haverford's awful runners....they were chasing each other around....it looked like the goddam benny hill show....
freaks.
paranya is rude. cant handle being curtious. and that is the truth.. one hell of a runner though.

Allright - Good to see some Section 4 Boys in here. I ran for Elmira Southside '89. Macfu- We had some pretty good 4X8 battles with your squad from U-E although it was before your time. Luckily we had a pretty good lead on you after 3 legs at the state qualifier meet since Brian Clas was anchoring for U-E. But we had a 1:52 anchor so Clas probably wouldn't have made up much ground even if it was close. Clas was the man though - He used to trounce me regularly (and still would).
Fly - My wife graduated HHDS '93.
JMS - Granger was tha shit. Boy had wheels. But Clas ruled section 4 and states. Dave Garner was damn good too. Decent chance that I know who your wife is if she was a runner. Were you coached by Cardamone back then?
Tough to say who was the biggest name from Section 4. Clas or Paranya. Both were awesome, tho Clas was more of a standout in High School and took 5th at Oly Trials 10k. Paranya took 9th in the 1500 Oly Trials and was also part of the world indoor 4x800 record if I'm not mistaken.
I can still remember when Karl was a 2:02 800m guy. I had a conversation with him at the Invitational at Southside back in '92. He was saying that someday he wanted his school record in the 800m, which then was a 1:58!! How times have changed.
Just a thought..have US milers EVER been this bad compared to the rest of the world...not to sound pessimistic, but it seems that in the mile the US falls further behind EVERY single year; i wouldnt be suprised if not one American makes it to the SECOND round, let alone make a final, let alone dare to place in the final....i mean come on, the US is one of the largest countries, the richest, best resources, tracks, etc, its kind of sad
Fly- Yes, I was coached by Cardamone through high school. At some level, he will always be my coach. I get motivated just hearing the guy's name. My wife is Nicole Holleran (now Sweeney). She didn't run or play any sports in school, but now she's a pretty good runner. I think we're coming home for the Wineglass Marathon this year.
Back to Paranya - I remember when he decided to try the 400m hurdles. His first time out he ran one of the fastest times in the state...must have really pissed off guys who focused on that event. But I don't think he ever beat Granger's Section 4 Record in the 800.
Yeah, 89 was definitely before my time. I only ran track in 92/93 and xc in 93. Hey fly, did you go to Albany? The HHS 4x800m that year was nice. You guys went under 8:00, right. There wasn't a lot of competition in section 4 for you guys other than Sydney. I pretty much stuck with the mile and 2 mile because we didn't have a chance in the relay.
JMS - Cardamone was awesome. For a really short time he coached at HHS but the immaturity of our girls team drove him away. When I'm back in town I occasionally run into him at Hogans or Z-boni's. Congrats on marrying Nicole. She was a neighbor and I always thought she was cute.
macfu - We didn't go sub 8:00 in '93 but we were close. Yes I went to Albany. Did you go to Binghamton by chance?
OK. Another Paranya story. It was the Section 4 meet (at Vestal?) in '92. Karl's warming up for the 800m and I ask him how his season's going. He said he's managed to go sub 2 for the half. Believe he said 1:58 high. Then asked him what he thought he'd do that day, "a 1:56 or so?" He replied, "I'm not sure, I think I already peaked."
From out of nowhere he blasts a 1:54 and wins.
Fly - You must be one of the Osbornes. We ran into one of you guys at Hogans when we were home for Christmas. There are too many of you brothers - I can't keep track.
As far as the biggest name from Section 4: Clas or Paranya -If we're including the women, we should also throw in Suzanne Girard (Maine-Endwell) who was an All-American and Big East champion for Georgetown in the early 80's. I'm guessing Molly Huddle recently erased all of Girard's Section 4 records and she'll probably erase all of her Big East records too. When all is said & done, Huddle will probably end up being the biggest name from the Section.

i aint much of a speller (or runner)
i roomed on the junior national team with karl-- seemed like a nice guy to me...
Ryan, its good to hear from you. Where are you living now? McPherson
Slightly off topic, but isn't Tamara Lave, who was selected to the World's marathon squad a Haverford alum?
no, i don't beleive so. not in the last 10 years at least.
