I am out of shape and need to get ready to compete in the fall for cross-country. I have about a month to lose 15 lbs. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can do this and is it even possible.

I share your troubles. I find it hard to even get motivated. I've worked on my eating habits, but I can never seem to get my ass out the door.

i think it's a little stupid to try and lose 15 pounds in a month. you'll feel cruddy and it will effect your training negatively. if you're increasing your mileage, eating healthy, and hydrating, the excess weight will come off, but it will take some time. i put on about 15 pounds during time off for an injury and have lost about half of it in the last 3 months. you can lose it faster, but i think it's a lot healthier and beneficial to your running if you do it slowly, maybe not as slow as me. no shortcuts in gaining fitness or losing weight.
I replied before to your request. Here goes again, in summary, my thoughts. First, only lose a pound or two per week. One pound is reasonable, meaning only a 500 kcal deficit each day. Second, it matters more that you are fit by late October than late August. Too many people peak at mid-season because they lack the patience to be consistent and paced in their training, eating, and activities which take away sleep and energy needed to peak at the proper moment.
Eat no bad food every other day and only one meal or one bad snack for you on the opposite days. You can do it if you are realistic. Next, get in 10-15 more miles per week in your training an your weight will drop and your times improve. Good luck. Tom S. A 10 mile increase in training can mean a 30 second improvement in your 5k time if you are running just 30-35 miles per week and move to 40-45 per week.
