I had the pleasure of testing Doug on a few occasions when at Athletics West. He was one of those people who didn't move to Eugene (nor did Marsh, Diemer or Benoit, to mention some good runners who did just fine staying in their home environment), but who flew in to Eugene to be tested periodically. I'll always treasure his visits because of his pleasant personality and becasue he used to give me his log to look over and would ask what I thought of his training. I don't think it is right to divulge that information in specifics, but Doug was one of those people who had a somewhat different approach to workouts. He could probably give lots of runners the courage to try things a little differently. He reminded me of Jim Ryun in that people often used to say they could have been even better if they trained differently. Great performances come from talented athletes who fit perfectly into a particular training scheme. Ryun and Padilla have often been my examples to support that contention. Just had a visit with Ryun last week in DC and it's still fun to talk over those days, while our wives shake their heads, wondering if we will ever tire of rehashing it I'd love to get to visit with Doug again sometime about training.
