FUKUOKA, Japan: Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie won the Fukuoka International Marathon on Sunday, barely missing out on a meet record.
Gebrselassie, winner of this year's Berlin Marathon, pulled ahead of two-time world champion Jaouad Gharib of Morocco and Ukrainian Dmytro Baranovskyy with three kilometers left before crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 06 minutes, 52 seconds.
Gebrselassie, who won the Berlin race in September, finished just one second outside the meet record set by Japan's Atsushi Fujita six years ago.

Doese annyone know what hapened to luc krotwaar. Did he finish, or even start, he was aming for a time around 2:10.
He finished around 2:17h, hamstring problem slowed him down.
That's a damn impressive finish for Cabada on the first go around. Well done and best of luck moving forward.
Click this site; check out the Media Player or Real Player icon on the top right and click it. You can watch 49 seconds of the Fukuoka race shown at TV Asahi news Sunday evening. Of course, they show Okutani's finish first and then Geb's finish.

Geb. is amazing, especially because he is so busy when he is not running. Most world class runners just run and then sleep or relax (think Kenyans), but Geb. puts in a full day working around his businesses in Adis Abeba and fitting in a run or two every day, either very early in the morning or at other times that he can fit in.
Geb. actually said training for the marathon is easier than when he was a track runner, because now most of his training is simply going out and running, and his runs are at a good pace (progression runs). But once again, I don't think there are many who could manage to run at Geb's level and combine a full day of meetings and business dealings as Geb. has done....that is what is the most impressive aspect....

Makes me want to be Japanese...
Them Japanese sure talk funny!
Hey! Think how I felt when I first came to the US! ;o) Or better yet, when I first went to Australia, after learning "American" English in high school for 3 years to hear this "G'Day, mite (mate)!" What in the world was that? Grew to love it though!
I'd have to admit, they (Japs) must have sounded funny when Fujita took a brief lead!

This was a great tactic for Geb. I'm still convinced that London in April will be one to many marathons in a year's time, even for the Great Geb. I feel he'll have a hard time improving on his PR now, much less getting the WR...
Anyone know how many track and road races he's run this year? If he cools it on the other races he may be ok...
Geb's comment after Fukuoka, I thought, was interesting. He said that now he knows it's "better not to start out too fast in the marathon. I felt I was running much more strongly at the end of the marathon today."

2nd half: 1:02:33
By the way, the image is from 38k when Geb made a break (thanks to those who tried to teach me how to add the images!). It's from the website of Asahi newspaper, major sponsor for Fukuoka marathon since its start.
When you see the furrowed brow you know it's Hammer Time! When a runner squints the top area of the face in a race it means they are pushing it to the red line. Once the lower face gets that rigor mortis look it's Crash Time.
