I would say that the majority of our economy is fueled by entertainment and modern conveniences.... even when it comes to the food industry, most of the food is just convenience food and unnecessary crap. If this is the case... I would say that the position an elite athlete fills in our society probably contributes more to our well being than most careers that people pursue. I would say that the world of athletics contributes far more to our well being than microwaves, dishwashers, cars, tv's, candy bars, pop, etc... athletics brings people together, to rival in each others success and share in each others happiness. It helps to offset the seperation between individuals that busy careers, online shopping, stock trading, and materialism tends to create in society. I remember watching a documentary on tribalism that attempted to show how the invention of money/currency has caused people to lose value for human relationships.... running counteracts this effect. It gives people an excuse to get out of their homes and meet one another on the street and it gives people an excuse to meet one another at events and to discuss and share in one another's lives. Elite athletes are a huge part of running and they are one of the reasons it is so exciting. Elite athletes bring new people into the sport and continue this trend.
