Jason, I know you went to Iowa State. I'm considering going there next year, and I was wondering what you thought of the running in the area. Any good trails, etc. You can reply here or email me if you want.

Paul, I went there for one semester of grad school in 1992. I was going through a lot of personal problems at the time, so I left and went back to UNR.
Iowa State is a great university for both education and running, although the altitude is low and the weather turns cold in October and stays that way until April/May.
I also recommend that you consider Loyola University of Chicago. Great running along the lakeshore, decent track program, good university and the Male/Female ratio is definitely in your favor: Horny Catholic Girls galore.

Paul,
I grew up in Ames before moving to New York City after college. The community is very supportive of runners, and there are enough dirt/gravel roads surrounding the town to give you miles and miles without seeing another soul. The city is laying down bike paths like it's going out of style, every time I go back to visit my parents I find another 4 or 5 new ones, but unfortuately they're all asphalt. You can get a map of all the trails from the Ames Parks and Rec. dept.
Jason moved away from Ames before the Iowa State Cross Country course was completed, it's one of my favorite places to run in the whole world. Iowa State has a little running club that seems to be pretty good, and there are several good races put on in the area throughout the year.
River Valley park on the eastern edge of town (on 13th Street) is another good place to run (dirt trails along the banks of the mighty Skunk River), it was where Ames High School held their cross country meets until ISU opened up their course. In addition, you're only a short drive to the footpaths at Saylorville Lake and the Martensdale Bike Trail.
As Jason said, the problem is the weather. It gets butt-ass cold sometime in Oct. or Nov. and doesn't thaw out until spring. But that's OK, it puts hair on the nuts.
I've got dozens of different routes in and around town to run, if you're interested drop me a line.
Ouch! Must hurt to run with a banged cock.
Jason banged his date's cock.
I think that there is a 40-something-mile long dirt trail that intersects the county. You have to drive down to a little town called Slater (10miles south of Ames) to get on it.
