Unless he dumps Matthew Macdonaldhay and Jake Gillianhall, there is no way he is gonna lose the upper body mass to run a marathon. Those boys love muscular rugged looking upper body mass
I have a meeting with LA next week here in SOCAL. He is interested in improving his basic speed, there's no doubt he will.
Yawwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!
1 year to train "seriously" and you still think he can only do 2:45 and no better? Well, at least you stick to your guns.
Sure you do.
He's a cyclist, not a runner. Takes years to recondition the muscles. In fact he was a professional cyclist or triathlete since age 18. He's in his mid 30s. He doesn't have the time to become a good marathoner. Since he did break 3:00 I'm being very optimistic with the 2:45. 2:50 would be more likely. 3:00 to 2:45 in a year would be HUGE, that's an 8% drop. Plus...he didn't completely slow down to a crawl. He ran 1:28/1:31 splits. And he was completely drained at the finish. It's not like he was all bouncy and refreshed, like he just went out for a 26.2 mile jog. If he ran like 1:20/1:30 splits, then sure maybe he could run 2:40 if he got over the wall, but he didn't hit it because his body is effecient in burning fuel. So, 1:24/1:26 splits...2:50.

Envy will get you nowhere. Look where he is and where you are. His first marathon was done on a 16 miler and guts. He now knows what we all knew after our first one. I will never run another step for the first week after, to well I could have done this if I had been able to do that, to now I'm pissed, and I'm gonna do it again. It took me 9 of them to learn how to run them, about 40 to get them out of my mind. At near 63 I'm thinking one more for old times sake at 65. His ego is really none of anybodys business. I admire his competitive spirit. When you let it go is when you start to let go of life.
How does anything he's done make him so arrogant? He's raising awareness for cancer research, living a healthy life, but based off what he has accomplished his running is far from "competitive". Give the guy a break, would you rather he grow fat and sloppy? The guy is a hero to many, why do you want him to fade away?
Some of your statments are a tad off. He was a 5k 10k runner as young teen, moving on to tris ataround 14 to 16 when he trained with the likes of Dave Scott and a few other Ironman winners. Having run 40 marathons myself and a few biathlons, I find your splits etc to be quite humorous and uninformed. His training for NY was mixed around travel, speeches etc and consisted of a couple 16 milers and some 10s at 6:00 min pace. He ran NY on guts.So if he gets the time to train for the next one he will run around 2:30s. He is in the age of peakness for marathoners, not world class, but consistent times, mid 30s to early 40s. You don't seem to understand will, drive, heart, and focus, much less ability to handle pain. You don't ride 200 miles with 20+ miles of mountains, and win without all the above. He has plenty of time, and he has hundreds of comments like yours to drive him.

Yeah, that's it, genius. He ran 2:59 and had to be carted around because it was all a part of a clever plan.

"You don't seem to understand will, drive, heart, and focus, much less ability to handle pain."
blah blah blah, over the mountain and through the woods in a misty rain...if it ain't in the legs he ain't doing it.
Anyone care to take bets? $200 says he NEVER runs under 2:30, $100 says he NEVER runs under 2:40, $50 says he NEVER runs under 2:50. He'll run one more, and that's going to be it. He'll really train hard this time, and maybe he spits out a sub 2;50 if he's lucky, then he'll give it up. Guts only gets you so far. If your legs ain't got it the all the heart in the world won't do you a bit of good.

Thousands of lives are in emotional disarray because of Dean K and Lance A. The horror!

Lance ran a 2:59 with almost no training. His goal was 2:59, trained for it improperly and still reached his goal..thats why he couldn't walk the next day. No one said he was capable of a faster time based on the training he had. Lance has the resources and the talent to run much faster and he chose not to run his fastest the first time...sorry thats hard for you to grasp.
Why would Lance want to do another? I did okay in the marathon, nothing to shake a stick at.
Plus, if he's looking to do an Ironman he would not win.
Give it up Lance, you use to be a good triathlete. And also a great cyclist. You cannot run fast now, it's over, deal with it.
I think he'll do worse. Let him run this one without world class pacers. Plus, he's on the speaker/rubber chicken circuit. You can't train seriously with that lifestyle. If the temperature exceeds 70 degrees next year put him down for 3:25.
I went from a 3:19 (40 miles/wk) 2:59 (50-60 miles/wk) to a 2:44 (70-80 miles/wk) in a year on a hard, hot course with about ten weeks of 70-85 miles. This is after starting running, not very seriously, four years prior. I'm not talented. I smoke and drink. If he really trains, 2:45 would be a walk in the park. I don't get your line of thinking that just because he was a cyclist, he can't be a good runner in a couple years.

if he trains seriously, builds from 50mpw to 80 from now to april, and then from 70-100 may-september, he has a serious shot at breaking 2:30. He may even run faster.
Remember fellas, he's one of the most talented endurance athletes in the world. and 'anyone' can run a marathon.
Leadville 100 (the mountain bike version) is an excellent challenge and perfect for Lance. The course is not technical at all so his inability to handle highly technical mountain bike courses will not be a detriment. Also, LA will do well at altitude--his desat levels are impressive in that he just does not desat as much as the average elite athlete.
However, I doubt he will be able to run 70-100mpw and train for Leadville to the level he needs to train. There would be a lot more pressure on him to do well (and break the course record at Leadville) than he would ever have in a marathon.
(For the record: I completed the Leadville 100 MTB race in 2000 just fast enough to get my belt buckle. I am not sure I ever recovered from the HAPE fully!).
"I only started running, at least seriously, when I was 19. Cycling was my first love and I dreamed of being a professional cyclist with one of the great teams in Europe, but I realised that is not a realistic possibility coming from Eritrea.
“But I did win a number of cycling races there. They were not over the long distances you have in professional races in Europe, more usually over 30 to 50 kilometres, mainly because we don’t have so many roads you can race on.
“My successes at cycling suggested to some local athletics people I might have good stamina and they invited me to compete in a race. I won that race, and I did well in the following races and I carried on running"

The best part of the interview was what LA said his day after was like. He had to be carted down the hall from his hotel room on a bellmans cart ! Priceless ! Can you imagine being in the lobby for that one ! Riding on the little luggage cart with his finishers medal around his neck ! Wooh thats a great image.
At least we finally know which sport is harder now! :-)
