It says in the Big 12 results that Jankowski from Oklahoma St. was DQ'd for hitting. What's that about? And does this picture:

have anything to do with it?

hahahahaah OUCH!
was he DQ'ed for hitting during the race or before?
That guys got a big dick.....
Dayum, that looks like it hurt. I ran a 1500 with a freshly split lip once, ran better than I was expecting, maybe it didn't hurt him too much. Although I can only imagine it hurt his breathing.
Didn't someone recently post after the Miami vs. FIU fartball game that a smackdown in a x-c race would be funny?
Life imitates theory.
Does anyone even know what actually happened between these two guys or is everything going to be based off assumptions?
Talked to an OSU runner.
The Colorado guy elbowed him in the stomach and Jankow threw his fist back.
For what its worth, the real story is there was a small elbow match between the two that ended without any problems (keep in mind it was a very crowded race as it was windy and muddy, everyone got elbowed at some point),and after Jankowski quickly passed Heinonen his stride may have slightly impeded Heinonen's (but as I said, it was a very physical, crowded race with plent of jostling). At this point, The Colorado runner reacted by taking a blatant swipe at Jankowski's calf/achillies area that thankfully didnt not send Jankowski to the ground; however, Jankowski reacted quickly(instinctivly maybe) be swinging his arm back and hitting Heinonen in the nose. Keep in mind, Jankowski is well over 6 feet tall and Heinoen is probly about 5'6'' so while the blow to face may seem harsh it more than likely was not intended to break anyones nose as it would have hit a taller runner in the upper chest...both let their emotions get the best of them and settled the dispute after the race like adults as both appologized for their actions. All that aside, people jumped to conclusions at the meet and Jankowski seemed to get a pretty unfair deal with the DQ considering Heinonen admitted it was his fault and actually apologized to numberous OSU runners during(yes during) the race for his actions. The issue has been settled and lets hope that is does not hinder either team in their postseason endeavors.
Who are you punches
I talked to the course marshall who made the decision and that story is basically right. The reason they couldnt DQ Heinonen is that an attempted trip can not be used as evidence to DQ someone, the broken nose on the other hard is undisputable. As in all sports its always the second guy to react that gets caught.
Imagine if this same thing happened in basketball or football. Not only would the athlete be immediately ejected from the contest, they a suspension would be issued from the conference office or institution prohibiting the athlete’s participation in subsequent competitions. Whether or not Janko "threw the first punch" or not really wouldn't make a difference - he's the one that got caught and broke the other's nose. It's not always fair, but that's how it would work in another sport and that's how it should work in cross country too. The guy should be suspended from at least the regional meet.
Didn't a similar thing happen at a Division II meet in Missouri a few years ago? I vaguely remember something about a Russian and a Finnish guy trading punches or something.
Well, I'm disappointed that Heinonen actually tried to trip the guy. That is pretty lame. Outside of that I give him kudos for finishing 9th in 24:50, running with a broken nose. Too bad for CU that Harkrader looks like he's not there yet. They'll have a solid 5, but I don't think they'll contend at Nationals unless top teams struggle.
you're probably thinking about when cabada pulled a knife on some guy
Who thinks Double J should pull his head out of his ass?
jankowski is a hockey name - hockey players fight - so is it really fair to DQ him?
this guy is so cool ! a real man.
why did the 2 time defending champ end up back in 12th. (Kenyan from KU).
Yep, I vote for Double J to pull his head out. CU looked pretty good today. If they only had 4 runners near the top and had actually missed Harkrader, then I might agree with him, but they didn't.
5 in the top 11 and CU keeps honing the blade as they peak for Nationals. They will be contenders.
What is astounding is why two runners would be trading elbows for the opportunity to go out faster than they should be lessening their chance of running their best race. In an 8k or 10k race, there is plenty of time to pass other runners. They are both stupid.
