Just wondering what you guys think about getting a standard for Nationals or the Olympic Trials the year before the actual event is contested. I can see the reasoning when it comes to the marathon and the need for 3 or 4 month build ups, but getting a standard 12 months or more before, in say the 5 or the 10 doesn't bode well for having someone really ready at race time. It seems that if you run fast the year before you have earned the right to say "I ran fast last year, and everything went right", but you should have to prove it again next year. A standard the year before is no guarantee that you will get it done in the trials year. Is it the best thing for a guy to have his first 10 of the year be at the trials? I know that there were a bunch of guys that used this idea at the trials in Atlanta, and it backfired on a lot of them. Also, if an athlete gets the standard the year before in the 5000m, and decides that he is just going to focus on speed, and then procedes to run a schedule of all 1500's and a few 800's, even though there will be heats and finals,(if you make the final you will cover 10k!)is this the best thing? Just wondering about this and how elites may feel. I know that it protects the possibly injured who may need more time to get ready, but again, if you are coming off an injury and are not 100%, do you deserve to be there?
