Perhaps showing how far Western runners have to go the American born record in the marathon is still 2:09:32 by David Morris in 1999. Do you think Brian Sell can break this?
I say he comes up just short.

I thought Kempainen ran a little faster than that in Chicago a while back
Kempainen ran Chicago?
Kempanien time was 2:08:47 but at Boston on a perfect day with a tailwind.
I regard Morris' time as being the American-born record, and yes I think that Sell has a good shot to break it.
khalid khannouchi is "American"
i believe 2:05:42 is faster than 2:09
without even checking I'm sure there is no such thing as "american-born record".
USATF website has:
Marathon 2:05:38 Khalid Khannouchi
Ossining, NY (30) London, GBR 2002-Apr-14
I would bet Brian Sell would not acknowledge any "american born record" . HE'll go for the 2:05:38 one.

Except for the fact that if you polled 100 Americans at random at least 97% would say "terrorist" before they say "American record holder".
And yes, there is an American-born record - I consider it the American record. If some guy comes to this country at age 25 and breaks the record it should not be recognized. Nobody wants Josephat Ngeti Chumbawamba to hold the "American" record - they want Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Jim Ryun, Billy Mills, or something else they can pronounce.
Of course Sell is going for the "real" record but still there is nothing wrong with aiming for something initially like fastest american born marathoner. It doesnt mean that anyone would think he is somehow "better" than the real american recorder holder but it is something useful to shoot for and gauge your progress. You stupid condescending critics do it all the time. If you were the #1 D1 freshman in cross this fall wouldnt you ackowledge it as an accomplishment or take some pride in it? How about the freshman high school record holder for 1 mile? Of course you look past it to the real records but it still has meaning whether you a-holes want to downplay it or not. When he went to high school, if every distance guy in the nation ran a marathon he prolly would have been in about 300,000th place. Now he is number one compared to those guys. Yea theres some foreign born American runners ahead of him which is totally legit, they are truly "American", no one disputes that. But to run the fastest of any guy who grew up here is still an accompishment if he does it in Chicago.
He said, "American Born" record retard, not "American". 2:09 would be a great goal for Sell and probably not out of his range.
so i am sure you discredit the silver medal won by Meb Keflezighi and his 10k AR, even though he has been through HS and collegiate running in the US, but his name is too hard to pronounce so his record doesnt count.
you probably still support the articles of confederation too, jack ass.
Good point ari gold.
HOw many guys if on vacation during the Olympics watching the Olympic Marathon would say "We got silver in the marathon." Likely most.Ditto if khannouchi won the olympics. YOu can't have it both ways.

STFU, bigot.

Remind me again where Frank Shorter was born.
Yeah but he's white so it doesn't count to the bigots on this site!

Actually, I WANT the American record to be held by dukerdog. But we're going to have to exclude a lot of other groups to make that happen.
Two American marathoners born overseas:
Frank Shorter- Germany
Alberto Salazar- Cuba
Frank Shorter was born in Munich, Germany, on an AMERICAN ARMY BASE AND NEVER HAD TO APPLY FOR US CITIZENSHIP. He was American the day he was born.
Top American-Born Performances:
2h08'47", Bob Kempainen (Boston)
2h08'53", Dick Beardsley (Boston)
2h09'00", Greg Meyer (Boston)
2h09'27", Bill Rodgers (Boston)
2h09'31", Ron Tabb (Boston)
2h09'32", David Morris (Chicago)
2h09'35", Jerry Lawson (Chicago)
2h09'38", Ken Martin (New York City)
2h09'41", Alan Culpepper (Chicago)
2h09'57", Benji Durden (Boston)
* Fastest, non-aided course is Morris' Chicago 2h09'32"... most impressive is Ken Martin's 2h09'38" on New York City's helluva course... faster than what Meb ran on NYC and almost better than Tergat/Ramaala. Anyone have any insight from that record run from Martin that day?
How are we missing Alberto Salazar - I understand his NYC 2:08:13 is a short course asterik, yet he ran multiple sub 2:09's in his career (Rotterdam, Fukuoka, Boston) if memory serves me...
he was born in Cuba
I was born in upstate NY, and I bet more of you would have trouble pronouncing my name than Khalid Khannouchi's. Does that make the dozens of American records that I'm sure to set not worth recognizing?
What if Craig Mottram came to the US? His name is as "American" as any. Who has an American name anyways? I'm sure there are as many people in England right now with the name Billy Mills as there are in the US, and you can't get any more American than him.
