I have a friend who is 6'3 and decided to do indoor track. He did fairly well, and got in to it in the beginning, but thought it was pointless and quit by mid january. How can i redirect him towards running, he has so much potential?!

Potential is nothing without desire. He has no desire, so he will never realize his potential. Let him play basketball.
Is 6'3 his height or nickname? If name... wow, that is better than 10'4... if height... where were you going with that tidbit?
I once heard the antithesis of "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." Someone said, "Sure you can, just feed him a salt tablet." So how does one feed 6'3 a salt tablet. Did he not like running on the indoor track with his heighth and leg stride? Was is Hartmann who had this problem too? Depending on how well your friend did, I'd have to say that perhaps some education should do the trick, if he truly understands how well he did and that he does have some talent, he would or should have a desire to pursue it. I have a brother who was like this, much more talented than myself at running, and also 6'2, who didn't keep up his talent right after HS. He's now gotten back into it and finds he's as fast as ever--he had kept running recreationally, I think his talent kept his desire in check. If education doesn't motivate, perhaps something else will, it sounds like it's still early, or at least not a completely lost cause.
I can understand what your friends decided to do, if working is making money to support his life, you cant really blame him.
In Kenya you just pick one person, anyone, train him like an animal and in less than 2 years I believe he would be already in the world running league.
Yes, it's the desire to run, not the potential actually.
I would suggest shaming him or guilting him into it. Why the hell not? He just doesn't get it yet, but he will...

Don't chicks dig track dudes? Isn't being a track stud the best way to attract the ladies? Convince your buddy that he'll have plenty to choose from if he keeps running.
But I only get the 'run lola run!' or 'hey tarzan city!' kind of quotes everytime I hit the road with my seniors. It was the mocking.
run lola run? do you have artsy hecklers in your area?
YES. Anything from beggars to physco cold blooded murders. (not to mention the hot blooded ones)
