Or maybe that was just how the heats broke out and he didn't have any say in it.

4:09.80 For Cummings
8:07 for Blood
Pinto 4:19 ... is he doing ok? That time is pretty bad for a 3:50 1500 meters guy.

yo you can suck it. whatever.
Congrats Sean on your All Time PSAC Record in the 1000 and Congrats to Spdell who broke the record at Penn State and held it for about one hour.
Since my last video went over so well with you guys I figured I would try this one..
what's with that kid's form?
haha i said the same thing. The kid also needs to get a hair cut and maybe that will fix his form from running side to side.
Well, the opening text screen was about the same thing in Without Limits (and not very creative). The quotes from that kid in the beginning are pretty cliche' along with the geese flying over the water (I though I was watching an Enya music video). Techno music doesn't work well because the beat is fast, and he's jogging uphill. Put that music to some sprinting or something, and it'll look much better. Since there wasn't a real beat going with the runner, you could've switched between the side view and front view with the beat of the song to have something going. Then, you just randomly cut that scene to go into a track workout. Why? You need a transition other than a fade out. To a non runner, this makes no sense at all (or from a film making point of view for that matter). What's with the music on the track? Ok, the lyrics fit. However, music like that does not go well with a shirtless skinny pale dude. It just doesn't (plus the camera is all over the place here. Invest in a monopod or something). Then the 3k: ok, you need help with music. RHCP is just a plain no for this race. I know the race is going fast. To an average Joe, it looks like they're jogging; it looks like it isn't tough at all. But, it needs to look tough. Get further away when video taping them, zoom in far, and fallow them. It'll make them look like they're moving faster, and you'll get that jossle effect in the early packed part of the race. The background will look like it's passing by faster, too. Having the camera sitting there waiting for them to pass really makes it look even slower. You started to do this in the Bucknell rae, but didn't quite hit it. Plus, tape your man! It's like you're taping randomly. Focus in on the main character to this story. Get your audio working better. That interview with that random dude after the DMR is too quiet. All I hear is the noise in the back. Plus, he repeats himself and it sounds scripted. Since Spence is gonna be in the 5k, get his thoughts on his athlete. What's the race plan? Does he feel he can hit his goal? The 5k footage wasn't too bad. You got the kid in the shots a lot, but the camera was still a little shaky. I really didn't like the music change though. You've been showing the same shot over and over, and just as it's starting to get a little old, a slow song starts up. That doesn't help it any.

I am not too interested on this kid's world view. He's a freshman. He's got the whole world ahead of him.

You've been showing the same shot over and over, and just as it's starting to get a little old and strained, a slow song starts up. That doesn't help it any. Lyrics are one thing, but beat is more important. Plus, it would be ok to have no music and less running footage. I'm sure I'm not the only one that was wondering what Spence was yelling during the race. It would've been cool to hear (I know you were up on the balcony at Bucknell. But, you can stand on those mini brick walls for some cool views of races) You should have a clock going during the race. Maybe say which lap number, and either get a running time or countdown going so people know how close he is to his goal. It'll build the suspense a little. Why did it end on the backstretch? I thought it would be at the finish line.
Overall: I like the story. I like running. That's why I wrote all this stuff. It has the potential to be great (I know, even with all that said). Choose songs better suited for distance running. Change things up a bit. Get better interviews, and get into that kid's head more. Sure he's got goals and likes running. But why? People get into the sport for various reasons. Why this kid? Make the story more personable, and it'll be more interesting.
Sitler, I think you did a pretty good job with that. Feel free to make one for the steeple (if thats what you run) come outdoor.
been looking all over the place for womens psac qualifying times. Does anyone know where they are posted?
Can't find them either...just e-mailed to get them or a link to them. Only thing publicly available are the rules/guidelines for how to determine the indoor qualifying standards. You could figure them out from this, but it's a lot of work:
The qualifying standards for the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships shall be established to ensure that competitive fields exist in all events. The formula 3x + y (x = previous year’s standard and y = the eight best performance by an individual in the previous year’s championships) shall be used to serve as a guide to establishing the standards. In addition to the formula the games committee will take into account other factors (i.e. field size, graduating seniors, etc.) to ensure competitive fields exist in all events.
Dude you are such and ass hole for making stupid comments about transitions and music selection...You obviously didnt learn not to judge a book by its cover! Get a life and if you didnt like the video or have anything contructive to say about it, dont say it at all...
Thanks Bill Rogers, but I can understand the video footage wasnt always the greatest, I personally thought the music was good, but I wish I wouldve interviewed my coach and stuff like that, but if you guys did like it I hope you could support me and vote on the 7th. Show some PSAC love.
Oh and big bear there is already plans for a steeple movie.
i enjoyed the video for the most part, but you need to do two things to win me over. 1.) bring the volume up during the interviews and lower it during the soundtracks so i can hear the story line a little bit better. and 2.) reduce the running sequences down so that they fit the average americans attention span (i.e. 40 - 65 sec). it runs over a little bit too much and drains on the viewers' commitment to the video. also, talk less like a surfer during the interviews. your thoughts on running are great but you are trying too much during the interview process and i'm looking for more of a believable college freshman - but if this is who you actually are, keep it and represent yourself completely. other than that, i loved the race but you really do need some kind of timer, its too hard to follow otherwise. the movie is great and i hope you keep up the good work, both in training and in running...
Right, I'm an asshole for making a critique on this guy's film. I have had lots of art classes, and obviously, you haven't. Whenever we had projects to present, there was always a room discussion with a critique. What happened? Well, a lot of the time people made suggestions. That's what I was doing. Sure, you could make the argument, "art is in the eye of the beholder." Ok, well, MOST of my disagreements were in technical issues.
It's like when anybody sees a running video they get wet in their pants and go, "oh boy! A new running video! Hot damn! I love it! He's just like me! I know how you feel! Weeeee!" You don't even care how good the quality is.
If you read my post, I did say that I was a runner, like running, and think the story was good. It needs improvement, though. No getting around that. Deny it all you want, but there are lots of things to work on. But, just like all critiques, here's the point:
I pointed out things he could work on, in the hopes that next time he'll plan things better. If he uses some of my suggestions, I think the film could become much better. That's the point of all critiques. You get someone's mind going. They think about how they could do things differently, and it may even turn out better next time.
If all you're looking for is a "great job! don't change a thing! i want more! lol! weee!" Then just view them to your parents. If he actually wants to make better movies, the kid could actually take what I said into consideration, and build upon it.
Things aren't always perfect; and this isn't personal, either. I'm trying to help the guy out.
Sitler:
I actually liked the video a ton. It was a bit long...but, to some extent, getting to 15:46 from 17:08 doesn't happen overnight. What took years/months for you...only took 15 minutes for me to watch (and only 15:43 for you to actually do in that race at Bucknell).
What I liked most about the video:
-- Don't know Sitler, but seems like just an average joe. To me, that's what Ship has always been good at -- taking a bunch of average Joe's and getting them to get stronger (much stronger) and race well as a tem
-- Spence...out there on the track, helping his guys. There's something to be said for that. Appreciated the fact that he tried to stay out of the way, but was there to bridge the gap late in the race when the Sitler and Boyer could have easily fallen off the pace. He pulled them back up close to Stetler.
-- Team work...there were three Ship guys working together to run well. That's classic Ship. Joe Hegge used to run like 50 mpw (to keep from getting injured). Matt MacDonald used to run 100 - 110 mpw. Yet, in races, the two of them were often joined at the hip...pulling each other along.
Being out in the PacNW -- I don't often get good insights into what's going on in the PSAC (other than race results). So, I hope you'll keep posting vids/updates.
Btw, where were you training (when you were by the lake)? Didn't recognize it.
Congrats on getting to goal #1 (15:46)...best of luck at psac's.
Hoovis
I think the video was pretty good...running scenes were a little too long for me as I found myself fast-forwarding through them to get to the interviews....Also please speak up when talking I could barely hear the one guy speak...in regards to Hoovis's comment on Spence pacing them...either you are a coach or an athlete, not both when it comes to your team...I am not denying the fact that Spence is a damn good runner, but I would like to see the athletes get the qualifying time on their own...without the pacing of their coach
