its a french word, les habitantes. it means, "the habitants", or something.

Anyway, "habitants" were french peasants that lived on and worked the land owned by french upper crust landowners. The landowners/managers, (seigneurs), owned/oversaw vast tracts of land that were divided into little, narrow slices which were occupied by les habitants.
OK, my brain just exploded trying to dredge up my grade 6 history. And I probably buggered up the seigneur bit. But the habitant stuff is good as gold. Promise.
