Actually, I have never seen a single thing that says this has anything to do with testosterone. It has more to do with gender equity in the classroom and the self esteem of girls when they hit puberty. They realize that they won't be "liked" by the boys if they're the class "know-it-all".
There are some pretty smart people that have been studying this for quite a while (I think at Harvard) and the American Association of University Women are pretty big on this issue.
