?Actually, I have never seen a single thing that says this has anything to do with testosterone. It has more to do with gender equity in the classroom and the self esteem of girls when they hit puberty. They realize that they won't be "liked" by the boys if they're the class "know-it-all".
I can not say either way on the testosterone theory, but the ?gender equity in the classroom? theory offered by Not Really is BULL-SHIT. There are many myths in the world, and that is one of the biggest. Maybe this was true at one time (50 years ago?), but NOT now. Have you EVER gone to school?? Have you ever looked around? HELLO? Girls are some of the most aggressive, brown-nosing, kiss-ass, hard-working, obsessed-with-grades students you will ever find. At least the equal to boys, if not the more aggressive students. Not Really said: ?They realize that they won't be "liked" by the boys if they're the class "know-it-all". ? Huh? It?s the BOYS who are even more ostracized for being nerds/brainiacs and who will not be popular with their classmates if they are ?smart!? The boys have many other avenues for attention other than doing well in school: sports, being party-animals, getting in trouble/fights, and conquering the girls! Socially, they are less encouraged than the girls to be good students in high school. Now girls recently have gained attention in some of those same traditionally-boy ?venues?(sports, being ?bad,? etc) and maybe they are emulating the boys in some ways(and THAT might curb their desire for good grades), but to say there is an unfair ?gender equity? issue in the classroom makes me sick. Girls are NOT afraid to raise their hands in class?.girls are NOT afraid to offer their opinions, girls are NOT afraid to push when they need to. Have you ever worked in an office?? Maybe is it is unfair to call the ?pushy? girl a bitch, and accept that ?pushiness? more in males, but it does not stop the females from being aggressive learners/students/workers from my perspective. If anything it drives them more. And here?s a news-flash to all those female?s out there: the reason the pushy male is not called a ?bitch? is because that particular slight is used for GIRLS! The pushy guys are called ?jerks,? ?bastards,? and ?A-holes? etc. So DON?T give me that line that guys never get called on being over-aggressive?they do?they just get called something other than ?bitch.?
So if males are better at math, it has NOTHING to do with gender-equity in the classroom. It could have something to do with females PREFERRING other subjects, or being pushed towards majoring in other subjects, but is not because they are not given a chance to shine/are repressed in the classroom. PUH-leeeaaaze!
