I was in Kunming, Dali and ZHONGDIAN.
The best place is Zhongdian, 10400 feet altitude. Small town, beautiful countryside, nice people, interesting food, Tibetan culture.
I am heading back to Zhongdian for a week in October. During the next 6 months, I will be spending a LOT of time in Lijiang and Zhongdian.
I passed through Lijiang on the way back to Kunming, and Lijiang looks to be AWESOME for training. Less traffic/pollution than Kunming, plenty of hotels, wide roads, lots of mountains.
Altitudes:
Kunming: 6200 feet
Dali: 6500 feet
Lijiang: 7900 feet
Zhongdian: 10400 feet.
All the Japanese train in Kunming, either right in the city or on the outskirts of the city. Japanese runners are very much into the "same old same old." They all stay either downtown at the Kunming Hotel or out at the "Kunming Space Hotel." They are, IMHO, totally missing out by not going to cooler weather and less pollution/traffic in Dali, Zhongdian and Lijiang.
If you can make it out to China (travel cheapest via Bangkok), you can definitely train with me. I am very fit right now from my time there.

My plan for October onward is lots of time in Yunnan Province, especially Lijiang and Zhongdian.
My races will be:
10km road, Bangkok, October 27.
Angkor Wat Half Marathon, Cambodia, Dec. 1.
Vientiane Half marathon, Laos, December 23.
10km road, Gamagori Japan, Feb. 8.
Biwa-Ko marathon, march 2.
Hamburg marathon, April 27.
In between these races I will be in Yunnan and Japan mainly. My Bangkok time is going to be minimized for a while.
Hamburg, IMHO, is the most underrated marathon in the world. Great course, fast field and about a million crazy Germans on the roadside making all kinds of noise.
