Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that there is a real conflict of interest in the development of our sport, at least for male distance runners in the US.
When considering that the Men's Olympic trials marathon for the 2008 Olympic Games is being run 10 months in advance of the Games themselves on a Friday morning no less in Central Park, New York, who will be there to watch and we already know it won't be on TV.
And just thinking about New York, it's a big place I know, but I really doubt too many folks will even notice that the Olympic trials marathon is being run in Central Park on a Friday morning, especially considering the New York City Marathon is two days later and that will completely overshadow the men's trials race.
More importantly, unless I missed something the US was/is still invited to the 2007 World Championships and as I glance at the calander it happens to fall only two months before this race called the Olympic trials in New York. Now maybe I'm just guessing, but last I knew the World Championships is kind of a big deal. And I find it hard to imagine that there will be guys who are trying to run in either the 5000m, 10,000m or marathon at the World Championship level and then come back and take another real crack at peaking for the Olympic marathon trials two months later. And by the way it's usually pretty warm in Japan at the end of August so those races won't be easy.
And lastly, why is the women's trials in April of 2008, but the men's is in the fall of 2007? I think it is safe to say that the field for the men's race might be the smallest ever considering they have cut out an entire fall season of marathons for male runners to qualify at in 2007.
Here's a prediction, it will be very hard to have our best runner's running at the 2007 World Championships, the US Olympic Marathon Trials and again 10 months later at the Games themselves.
The only reason the race in in New York is because the NY Road Runners have more money then the USATF so they bought the trials and fit it into their own agenda, not considering what's best for the athletes or the sport as a whole.
