I never understood why Cheptegei felt the need to move to the roads while still in his prime. I get the lure of the marathon and the money aspect but he was still dominant in Paris. Had he ran Tokoyo WC in 25, he likely would have won 4 consecutive world titles in the 10000 (no offense to Gressier). That with the WR and an Olympic gold and silver would arguably have made him the 10000 GOAT. Going further, if he somehow found a way to win gold in 27 and at the LA Olympics in 28, his GOAT case would be indisputable. He is still only 29. There is no dominant 10000 athlete right now. If he were to return, I don’t think it’s impossible he could accomplish those things. Whether it’s lack of mileage or other factors, it’s clear at this point he is not going to be a great marathoner, especially having to deal with Sawe and Yomif. What does everyone think? Would you like to see him back on the oval?
