Won't be long til Gout runs 18.9 according to Australian track fans, so it really doesn't matter.

The mistake was on me, not Rojo.

We even discussed Gout Gout's 19.67 on the podcast and later when we were talking about Blaskowski's 9.89 and Robert was saying it was favorable conditions I said, "I'm not giving it the full Gout Gout treatment".

But then I screwed up when putting up the podcast blurb.

I think everyone agrees Gout didn’t really run that time . Track is probably short or wind gauge malfunction , King Kenny is the real world leader

If you adjust for wind then Kenny has the world leading time.

You don't adjust for wind if it is within the allowable limits. Not deemed wind-assisted.

Yeah, but if you also adjust for altitude, sun angle, earth rotation, moon phase and air density / humidity, it's a dead heat.

Sprint analysts make that adjustment all the time to evaluate whose performance was better. Kenny's performance was objectively better.

A performance within permissable wind limits is not wind-assisted. Wind is ruled out as a factor aiding the performance. Bednarek remains slower.

But there is more to a performance than that. Altitude makes a difference, with thinner air (as we saw in the Mexico Olympics), as well as the composition of the track or maybe the shoes athletes used, at what point in the season the performance occurred, whether the athletes were at their peak, what was the level of competition, whether it occurred in a major championship, the relative age of the runners and where they were in their careers, etc.

So, using all of that, was Bednarek's performance "better", despite being slower?

Gout Gout's wind-adjusted time is 19.79 vs. Kenny B's 19.72, so there is no doubt whose performance was better, and there are major questions about the role of the win in Gout Gout's race. It seems there is a much larger wind advantage on that track in the 200m than measured by the placement of the gauge. So, I predict Kenny Bednarek takes the head to head matchups this year.

Gout Gout's time isn't wind-adjusted. It remains what he recorded. Within the allowable limits the wind is not deemed an advantage.

You don't know what you're talking about. It is very common for sprint analysts to adjust even wind legal times to evaluate and compare performances. Track & Field News maintains a list of adjusted 100m performances on its website.

There's nothing controversial about saying Kenny's performance was better. It's not some American bias thing, and it's nothing personal against Australia. In fact, Track & Field News uses the Dapena-Linthorne Tables for making adjustments. The tables were developed by Jesús Dapena at Indiana University and Neal Linthorne at University of Western Australia.

Wind-adjusted it is a better performance. Also Gout's time is still a big outlier and the performances in that race from everyone make you wonder if the wind reading was correct at only 1.7 m/s. But yes officially Gout's is the WL.
