“If I was a baseball coach with a pitcher, if I sent them down to the minor leagues to throw a couple of innings to see how their fastball is working and see if their changeup is there and see how their arm feels after 30 pitches or 60 pitches, I wouldn’t be criticized. So it’s basically the same thing.” - Bobby Kersee
I'm a fan now.
People on here have criticized Bobby a lot for his unconventional ways. I was part of that group. I get it now. He takes on a lot of the pressure that fans are putting on Mu and McLaughlin. These are two women who, from a young age, were dealing with unfair pressure due to their talents. It's the coach's job to do what's best for the athletes, not the fans. He takes the brunt of the criticism by saying crazy things and trying unique things to challenge his athletes as well.
This quote sums it up perfectly. He's doing what's best for Mu. The minor league thing makes so much sense. Track is a sport where you HAVE to perform at a high level every single time out. Our sport doesn't have a minor league. Any meet they enter creates an entire media cycle. They are simply not dealing with the same things that a C or even B level American deals with. . I know some posters will respond to this with a "boohoo we don't feel bad for you" but when you zoom out, if this is what Bobby thinks is best for Mu to get back out there and gain confidence again then I trust it and it doesn't matter what we think.
The 1500/3k stuff has been a unique way to put Mu out there with 0 expectations while she gets back to a better place mentally.
