You mentioned your change in training at the beginning. In November last year, you moved to Boulder in Colorado to join head coach Dathan Ritzenhein's US training group. What's new?
Robert Farken:
Quite a lot. The main change is that there is no longer a double threshold in the training concept. I have significantly more running volume than before, and my tempo running units are also longer than before. As a result, there is a bit more recovery between the days with tempo runs. I have the feeling that I'm coping well with this. I've been healthy for eight months now - that's a sign that it's working well for me and that we've found a good way to get me to the start line healthy.
Next races: Diamond League Oslo (mile)
Dessau (1500 m)
Team European Championships in Madrid.

So what exactly is the OAC Europe training? Because I know the OAC one pretty well, and it IS high mileage even for the milers ~ 80-90mpw in base with some weeks over 100, per Olli Hoare. That being said, double threshold as done by Jakob is regularly over 100mpw in the base period. Now, of course the OAC distance guys (not MD guys as much) do double threshold and probably mimic Jakob's base training in a lot of ways, making the whole thing kind of silly.
So I'm a bit surprised he is running significantly more, though it's possible he means after the base period and the OAC Europe crew drops significantly in mileage after their winter training.
Jens-Peter Herold's record over the mile has stood at 3:49.22 minutes since 1988. Robert Farken had already set a record over this distance indoors in 3:49.44 minutes and was not far off the outdoor best time. The Slovenian Zan Rudolf will again provide the pace in Oslo, and Timothy Cheruiyot (Kenya) and Oliver Hoare (Australia) are also back in the race.
