I thought Habz might have a race like this in him after a strong indoor season and pretty much leading the whole race in Rabat, fading but holding on strong.
This race is a reminder that the 1500m WC contenders later this year are not exclusively the GST guys. People seem to forget there are other quality athletes out there due to American bias, or whatever.

It’s hard to believe this record stood for 45 years in his country. He was an amazing athlete and I remember him all those years ago going up against Ovette, Coe and company…..
Wessinghage had personality and was very disciplined. I remember the former national coach saying that Wessinghage always studied his medical books in the car or on the plane when they traveled together.
Who is the Moroccan likely doper that came in 3rd (and who Habz immediately embraced?).
Why are you making things up again?
He competes for a country with countless busts and that is literally on the "most likely doping" WADA list of 5 or 6. Or are you saying that I'm making up a Moroccan coming 3rd, or that Habz immediately went over to embrace his fellow countryman?

You are really confused. Let's try slowly.
Habz is French.
Essayi was 3rd and he is Moroccan.
Habz immediately hugged Tim.
Then he hugged his (French) countryman, Lagtiy Chaoudar.
On the footage you provided he was never seen hugging Essayi.
Running right at the end of an Olympic season and just 48 hours after winning the 1980 Golden Mile, Ovett surprised everyone (mostly himself) with a 1500m. WR, run on one of his favourite tracks in Koblenz, Germany.
The race really came to life when Wessinhage, perhaps deciding that Ovett was looking a little jaded, went for it,dragging him round to a new mark of 3.31.36, three quarters of a second under Coe's existing time.Wessinhage too was under the old WR, as was the third placed Hudak. As always, Ovett seemed to do just enough and had plenty more in the tank when he crossed the line....

Not saying these boards are not biased, but when 1-3 from the previous global champs are in GST (4 hasn't raced and 5 has been at 1 of them as a challenger), it is not exactly a big leap to see them as the medal favorites regardless of nationality.

What has being in GST got to do with them being regarded as favourites?
As Farken revealed to SPORT1 afterwards, it wasn't initially his plan to set this high pace: I wanted to be far forward in the field so that I could react and somehow keep out of the way. But I realized relatively quickly that people were hesitating at the front and thought: 'Oh, screw it. I know I'm in good shape. I know I've got the legs'.” The 27-year-old added: “I just had the confidence. I had the balls to go for it.” Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
