Stretched for a few seconds, ran, cramped again, stretched then ran to the finish with a wonky limp and missed the 3 hour mark by less than a minute.
This happens to me too even though I'm pretty good shape with good nutrition (did 275g my last marathon). Would love to hear ideas of how to prevent this.
As I said, I think it’s just water. Most of us drink out of those little cups, half of it ends up on our faces. If you can find a way to get more water into your system, it would help.
The energy from ATP is released via hydrolysis, and water is what breaks the bond between the second and third phosphate. If you’re low on H2O, the process will be compromised.
Yea I'm out - time to stop following live marathoning I reckon. I'll just stick to diamond leagues. BBC's iplayer doesn't even work for non-uk IPs. and why should I have to find a VPN just to watch a marathon. If a race isn't livestreaming it on Youtube, I could not be fecked anymore. Not worth the drama.
You must not be in the States cause almost nothing is livestreaming free on youtube without a VPN.
But it's easy. Get Nord VPN and connect to the UK. Sign up for a BBC account. You just need an email and a British postal code. I'm pretty sure I live in Kensington Gardens. When they ask you if you've paid for a BBC license, say yes because you've paid in spirit and have watched Fleabag six times and supported Broadchurch on Netflix.
It seems like a PITA at the present time but if you remember your password you can watch London and Berlin every single year up through the wheelchair finishes and fall asleep 3am Pacific time just as they start to show some running.
So I only caught the end yesterday but watching a full replay on YT today I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been to watch Sawe run alone for 30 minutes with ZERO coverage of the chasers; HTF is this possible in this day and age ? Can't they afford a couple more cameras ? Or does the director just ignore them ? Absolutely appalling. US marathons get a bad rap for showing useless "party" footage but this is no better.

After the Boston coverage, I had very low expectations and decided I wasn’t gonna get mad regardless of how bad it was. It was even worse.

mid 1970s was my marathon racing era. Boy I wish I had the shoes from now back them. Yes, they would have made my racing times faster compared to ordinary shoes but I had to have heavy inserts etc so the shoe effect would have been much large. Also the shoes would have helped diminish the training damage problem. Plantar fascia problems meant an end to my sub 2:30 efforts.Had a 20 mi working doing the first 20 of a marathon in 1:52-mid. I was there and then I wasn't.

Anecdotally I drank more in this London marathon than ever (they were giving out plastic bottles so this was handy), however with the low dew point I couldn't tell if I was sweating a lot but I did lose my electrolytes salt caps early on.
The 2 marathons I did not cramp in (out of 8) were anecdotally the two coldest (incl. Boston 2018). There probably is some truth to the dehydration + electrolytes theory, but frankly, i think these are mainly ADDITIONAL stresses added to the primary one which is fatigue and lack of preparedness / i.e. exertion.
On a hot summer day you can go run a normal run or even long without any cramping issue despite not taking in liquids or energy. Because you're nowhere near exertion.
I did have pre-existing "knots" or muscle tension in the exact spot that tends to cramp, so taking care of that too (massage, graston, conditioning) might help too. Clearly I am no expert in this but I am sure I am far from the only one this happens too, sadly. Seems to be multifactorial. Every little bit of help, helps. Including volume, long runs, strength, massage, hydratation, electrolytes maybe, and even anxiety/stress management. I noticed I had little cramps in other muscles during the taper, likely due anxiety. Again, no magic pill to erase that risk, but for the next one I'll work more on all this. I've cramped in past marathons as early as 18-20 miles in, then 22-24 mi (NYC) and now 25 mi (London). Push that crampong distance to > 26.2 and we are good! :)
