Seeing the elite women's start is a real reminder of the difference between a mixed pace field and women's-only. They look like such a tiny group to be spread out over 26 miles...

55 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny, 1 mph wind as the women's race begins. Really gorgeous spring Sunday in London. I'm sure the marathoners would appreciate a bit more cloud cover, but still good conditions for racing. Should get up to about 62-63 degrees by the finish.

tbh I think they should scrap the separate start. The technology these days is good enough to ensure good of the women even if running with the men.

Top four women -- Tigst Assefa, Megertu Alemu, Joyciline Jepkosgei, and Sifan Hassan -- are through 5k in 15:34, which is 2:11:15 pace. The first 5k is significantly downhill but that's still a lot faster than the initial pacing aim (2:15:00 pace).
