27:40 10000 PR; 1:00.59 half-marathon PR. Not exactly a nobody.
2:08:00 is MUCH better than any of those.
And it is MUCH better than his 2:11:08 PR from six months ago.
No, 2:08:00 is not as good as his 10,000 and half marathon PBs. 27:40 put him number 82 on the 2024 world list. 1:00:59 would have been number 129 on the 2024 world list. 2:08:00 in 2024 would have only been 173 on the world list.
He is much faster than his old PR though. A lot of that was probably the Pumas though.
You are comparing a 33 min guy who improved to 2:10 with a man who ran 27:40 last year and was top 10 at the track trials and debut marathon was 2:11.05 at NYC.??
I mean it's surprising but I've seen more shocking results.
-2:11:08 in NYC last year, but NYC is a hard course and it was his debut marathon. First times always hard
-9th at OT 10K in 28:08. Only 8 seconds and three spots back from Mantz. 27:40 PR
-Went sub 61 and Houston and 61:29 on a tough Atlanta course. 7 seconds behind Young in Houston and beat him in Atlanta
-Also paced 30K at 2:08 pace in Chicago last year for Young, has experience.
So take a sub 61 HMer who said he thought he was in the shape of his life and has been hanging with the best US marathoners, put him in a fast race with good conditions and a nice pair of kicks, and it kinda makes sense he goes 2:08 flat.
Check out his TFRRS... went from a pretty average runner at UT Martin, to pretty good runner senior transfer at Iowa State, to world class 1/2 and full marathoner in 4 years. One rarely sees this kind of progression. Wouldn't it be cool if it worked like this for more people.

Not comparing them, I simply said I had no idea who he was, but it reminded me of another guy. Clearly Ryan Ford has been running very well for a very long time and there is nothing suspicious about his progression at all. George James on the other hand...
Fun fact: Steve Jones and Ryan Ford were both sitting at the same table at the ZAP gathering on Sunday afternoon in Brookline. Unsure what words of wisdom Steve may have imparted, but Ryan certainly ran a small race. To those of us in the know about his training, his performance at Boston - while very impressive - was not a surprise.

For every guy like this, there are 10,000 who train hard only to age group at their local marathon. I want to see his training though. Anyone have a link to his strava or a log?

Ryan Ford is a runner using Strava. Join Strava to track your activities, analyze your performance, and follow friends. Strava members can plan routes, participate in motivating challenges, and join clubs. Get started by sign...
JP Flavin is way more surprising. Hope CJ gives a more inspired training block this time so we can see more 2:08 guys on the line when the trials roll around again.
Boone is a busy, crowded, college town with traffic and people everywhere. It's not like they are living in the middle of nowhere. What make you think living there makes them weird?

It would help if he got rid of that new porn stache, and he runs for Zap. Nuff said.
Oh ya, this guy runs for Zap, right. Moses Cone 10 miles or so from Boone in Blowing Rock is heaven on earth. A lot of people would get fast if they could move there.

It would seem that data dude is much more data driven than data guy 😄
