Faster times, and he's racing against other guys with supershoes. (Rupp broke the official shoe rules in 2016, he raced in a shoe that was not commercially available, falsely claiming it was a Zoom Streak prototype)
People over here throwing a party for a dude who finished FOURTH??? Raise your standards and expect more from Americans.
I just wonder if you were with insufferable when these other runners who you now proudly esteem were also in Conner's stage of his career.
Meb won his first WMM at 34. I wouldn't be surprised if prior to that you were old man screaming at clouds with him, like when Meb was 28 at got 7th at the Chicago marathon were you also like "this freakin loser, how come people are excited that he got 7th? He's never going to be anything, you all need to raise your standards."
Did I call Mantz a loser? Did I say he’s never going to be anything? No, I didn’t.
My message is stop acting like Mantz is better than the men I named, and stop throwing a party for someone who got fourth. Let’s respect the accomplishments of the best Americans of yesterday, and let’s believe that the best Americans of today are capable of doing better than fourth.
Lots of examples of USA being insular, this ain’t one of them.
Mantz did a great job, and it’s worth celebrating. This is also an American site; while it’s great to recognize the performances of others (like Korir, great win), the Americans here are allowed to celebrate their hometown hero.
why do you think this is an american site? this is the world wide web. which part of that are you struggling with? prime example of what I'm talking about
Maybe he was misled by the fact that Let'srun is a Fort Worth based company whose employees were also American citizens, or maybe he was thrown off by the special coverage they give to American track and field meets or American World Marathon Majors.
I really don't know what could have thrown him off.

Mantz doesn’t have faster times. His official PR is 2:07:47. Rupp ran 2:06 three times.

Ah so we can't celebrate the second fastest ever recorded American marathon because that would be disrespectful to the American marathoners of yesteryear. Give me a break.
Or better yet. Ask Meb, Galen, and Ryan about whether or not they feel disrespected by people celebrating Mantz's 2:05. Because they're not nearly as petty as you are. And I'm sure if they read the nonsense you're throwing out there, they would say he doesn't speak for me.

True. But the 2:05:08 is a legit time w no significant tailwind. Conner would run as fast or faster on a pancake flat course. Plus he’s quite a bit faster over the half marathon than Rupp now too. Still seeking the elusive podium or win, but he’s certainly ready to set an official, sub-2:05 AR.

Times at Boston don’t count. Are you new to the sport?
Why are you thrilled about fourth? Is your regard for Americans that low? Do you not think Americans should be expected to do better before throwing a party for them?
The 2025 Boston Marathon was the fastest since 2011. Arguably the most talented field in Boston Marathon history. Understanding that weather, conditions, shoes, all play a factor, Conner's time would have won him every Boston Marathon in the past 13 editions.
Good post. I thought he was going to get 2nd until they veered the chase group off to the right at the end. Still great effort.

He’s already run on a pancake flat course. He ran 2:07:47. Not as good as Rupp.

In addition to his 2:05:08 Mantz also has a 59:15 and 59:17. Rupp has a 59:47 (non-legal course)

Understanding that all those things play a factor, your conclusion is irrelevant.
Mantz caught a huge lucky break when Lemma dropped out, and he still couldn’t finish top 3.
Mantz is a very good runner but let’s stop pretending he’s one of the all time great Americans.
Mantz was 20 seconds behind a world top 3 marathoner.

They are not record eligible. That doesn't mean they "don't count." Or are you going to go to Ryan Hall and tell him "actually I think your Boston 2011 time was meaningless", because it's not meaningless to him.
You are a miserable person. You keep seeing indirect slights to other people who don't at all perceive it as a slight to them at all. Conner is happy about his PB. Meb, Galen and Ryan are also happy for him that he ran a good race and a fast time. You speak for none of them.

We’re talking about marathoning, son. If you want to bring other distances into the conversation and talk about who’s the better all around runner, that debate won’t go well for you.

Rupp medaled at the Olympics. Mantz did not.
Rupp won a Major. Mantz has not.
Rupp > Mantz
I get it, but Mantz is ready to run 2:04-2:05 on a flat course right now. So, let’s see what he does in the fall.
Good point on the Olympic medal, that is an important achievement, but, remember, Rupp had an advantage that day over his competitors that nobody else has anymore.
Rupp is still the more accomplished marathoner, I agree with you. But I wouldn’t say better. Mantz is certainly better over the half now and faster in the full.
Also, even though Boston is point to point and slightly down overall, it’s not faster than a record-eligible course unless there’s a significant tailwinds, which I don’t believe there was today? Although the weather was otherwise perfect. But the late hills of Boston make up for the drop. You would know had you run it.
Mantz was 20 seconds behind a world top 3 marathoner.
thats like battling Jacob in the stretch.
Mantz is now officially world class.
Okay, so you’re excited about him being world class? THAT is your standard for throwing a party? Geez Louise, Americans will never reclaim the #1 spot in the marathon with that kind of defeatist thinking.

False on all accounts. It was a prototype, who's to say they were going to name it a Zoom Streak or something else? They could have easily transitioned the line to be what is now the Vaporfly if they wanted. It had the same colorway as the Zoom Streak but if you look at any major marathon, each company will have the same colorway for all of the new models their elite athletes are running in. The claim Rojo likes to bring up about them "disguising" it is idiotic
