Jane Hedengren is a terrific talent. But all this discussion about her and some of the other talented high school runners, present and past, ignores one essential fact. They're all big talents in a small pond. What really counts is where they are as mature runners, in college and beyond. The "big pond" is found primarily in East Africa. There's no getting around the dominance of the Africans, and as the distance increases the dominance is more stark.
Hedengren is hopefully coached so that she continues to improve every year and can one day compete with the best Africans.
They are not big fish in a small pond. The USA has 340 million people. 500,000 girls participate in track and field yearly with an enormous number committed to distance. All the participants in the invitational 2 mile represent the top .1 percent of the population/distance talent wise. These are elite athletes by any measure, with JH being at the top of the list.
I see the 3200m en-route posted, 9:30.68 for Jane. No 3000m en-route posted as of now, but from the video, I estimate 8:54.4.
I don't think they set up a camera for the 3000m en-route split for the 2 mile race. You can see the camera set up at 200m to go which would be 3000m for the 3200m races, but I see no such camera set up 18.688m back for the 2 mile race. You can see the 1500m en-route camera set up on the other side of the curve but, I don't ever see one for the 2 mile 3000m split.

Gonzalez called out the split when Hedengren passed 3,000m: 8:57
He was incorrect. He used the boys' line. He also called out 440 and 880 splits at her start line.
Yes, the 200 m to go line becomes the 3018.688 m line in a 2 mile. That's about 3.4 seconds after Jane would have passed the 3 km mark.
The track did have 7 bright green cones evenly-spaced between the 2 mile start line and the finish line (exclusive) just inside of lane 1. They were the 440-yard lap markers. The red-jacket official even stood next to a different marker each lap, while giving the girls their laps-to-go, making his way from the farthest/440 yd marker on down. 440, 880, 1320, 1760/mile, 2200, 2640, 3080, 3520/2 miles. Announcer might have been excited and called the splits early, but the markers were definitely available, though.

Well, they said that they had a timer at the 3k mark, so if that ended up not being the case then someone at the timing company really screwed up.
How do you know Sadie is not injured? The main criticism of her over the years is that she races too much. Look at her racing schedule since she was 14. This is a girl that loves to race.
If she just only wanted to avoid Hedengren she could still run other meets. The fact that she has not been racing at all may be an indication there are other issues. Stop making assumptions, or maybe you have some inside knowledge to share...
No inside knowledge. Just know that here Sadie says she is planning on running at Bryan Clay. Hedengren had not declared an intention to rub Bryan Clay at the time. Since Hedengren has registered for Bryan Clay running the 5K. Sadie is not registered. Sadie appears nowhere on the heat sheets. Sadie says she plans on running Bryan Clay. Then Hedengren registers for Bryan Clay . . . Sadie doesn’t register for Bryan Clay as she had previously indicated she would. No “inside information” just those 👆 facts. Draw your own conclusions. 🤷♂️
Sadie has been mentioning some Achilles issues on social media, and someone earlier in this thread mentioned a problem with her foot. Unless you are implying that Sadie has supernatural psychic abilities, there's way she would have known that she would be injured.

They had one at the 3000m for the boys' 3200m race, which would of course not be accurate for the girls' 2-mile race, unless they moved it between races. The boys' 3000m enroute and the girls' 3200m enroute are posted. My guess is they did not get the 3000m for the girls.

Fastest times doesn’t necessarily mean greatest. she needs to win big races
Hedengren has already won NXN, Woodbridge, Nike Indoor Nationals, Nike Outdoor Nationals, Brooks PR, and Arcadia. Is that enough big races for you?
It certainly is enough. She's in the conversation for sure.
I wasn't commenting on Hedengren specifically, I was commenting on the perspective some Letsrunners have that fastest time means greatest. Which is think is lame.
Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals. Justin Gatlin has a faster 100m dash PB, but that doesn't put him over Owens as an all-time great.
Yohan Blake has a faster PB than Gatlin, but Gatlin has an individual Olympic gold medal etc

Uh . . . the US National High School record for the girls 1 mile run is held by Jane Hedengren. No US high school female athlete has EVER ran the 1 mile as fast as Jane Hedengren and she did this last month on a 200M track with 2x the turns and 1/2 the straight aways. Last year Sadie and Jane raced??? Sure “last year” i.e. in the past Sadie beat her in a 1 mile race. It’s simple Jane Hedengren has improved since then and is now a superior 1 mile athlete than Sadie Englehardt. That . . . and she beat Englehardt by over a minute at NXN. So yeah . . . as of TODAY . . . Jane Hedengren is a better, faster, 1 mile athlete clearly evident by the fact she holds the US national girls 1 mile record of 4:26.14. It’s really quite simple. Strange you can’t understand something as basic as this. 🤔
Just jumping in to point out Mary Cain ran a 4:24 mile as a "US high school female athlete"...Alexa Efraimson also ran a 4:03 1500m, which is certainly better than a 4:26 mile. Even Kate Murphy's 4:07 puts her on a similar level to Jane. And while 9:34 is a massive NR in the 2-mile, there have been quite a few 3k times in the 8:58-9:02 range that often get forgotten in conversations revolving around 3200/2-mile. Not to mention Cain's 8:58 came in a tactical race with the last mile in ~4:39, beating the best juniors of East Africa...
An earlier poster put it best: Hedengren is amazing on the US stage, and putting herself in the conversation for top 10, even top 5 all-time. But Decker, Cain, Fairchild were all not only ridiculously dominant on the domestic level, they made their mark at the international level, which Jane has yet to do (and frankly, will not be able to do until later in her career). She should be celebrated, but not at the expense of other extremely talented athletes, including her peers (Englehardt, Leachman, and yes Tuohy).
“Jane Hedengren Breaks Mary Cain’s High School 2 Mile Record The 18-year-old from Utah already shattered high school records in the mile and 5,000 meters earlier this year.”
