Distance medleys are only interesting to Americans, and medleys overall are only interesting to the absolute top tier track and field countries. The rest of us who can barely scrape together one decent athlete in each event can't be bothered.
I want to see the open 3000, but I realize it's not going to happen because it cuts into a lot of the matchups in the 1500 and 5000, and cross country, which feels like the most likely event to be added.
I want to see ultras or mountain running as well. Yes, a lot of people are talking about how it wouldn't be interesting and how nobody watches it, but think of it more as a way for the host country to showcase the country at an even larger scale than the marathon does. It's not like the broadcast would keep up with every minute of the race, but it would check in periodically.
Ultra fans in LRC won’t give up on having an ultra in the Olympics, but they aren’t living in reality. If it did happen, it will be when pigs fly and hell freezes over. It would have to be both and not just one. If it did happen, it would called the Hell Freezes Over Olympic Ultra.
Olympic air time cost a fortune way and the fact that extremely few people will watch it is a big deal. Once again, it needs to prove it can attract viewers and it can’t debut at the Olympics.
No, the Olympics aren't and have never been about only broadcasting commercially viable sports, otherwise you wouldn't have sports like modern pentathlon, skateboarding, breakdancing, triathlon, artistic swimming, all of the Paralympics and a majority of the events in the winter Olympics, like bob and skeleton.

I guess people have been pushing for XC for several for severals years with no luck. You believe a race 5-10 times longer will make it?Another problem is that is run at a comparatively slow with a lot of the runners spread out. A lot of it will be watching one guy run 6:00 pace. Only the hard core fans would find it interesting.
First - I agree with the many that mentioned adding cross country. It would be thrilling to watch world class athletes running two laps on the Mt SAC course. Second - The women's heptathlon needs to become the women's decathlon! Lastly, instead of adding events, add days for qualifications. Adding one or two days for qualification rounds (especially after the repechage rounds in Paris) would allow those athletes to comeback and run the events we all want to see. Watching SML run both the 400H & 400 would be worth the price of admission.
How is this even a question? Cross Country! I was there prior, would give the distance runners with a different skill set a chance to shine and get a medal. Stage it like they did in Arhus and it would be GREAT.
The LA28 schedule includes the Olympic debuts of the 50m backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly for both men and women, and a mixed 4x100m relay on the track.
Any new events should be short, but have a novelty component to keep casual fans entertained. A vertical kilometer would be a nice addition, as would a broad jump (long jump without running start). Maybe a 4k xc race with a team component could be interesting enough.
A 5k with 12 people, but every lap after the first 600 the person in last place is eliminated. Completely changes the strategy.
Realistically though it would be cool to see a 3k and maybe another off distance like a 600, 1k or 1200. Watching the 800 v 400 or 1500 runners would be interesting.
XC would also be a good one but it might spread the distance runners across too many events. Like others have said I think xc is a better fit for the Winter Olympics.
All Trials / qualification events for US athletes should be fully coed.
Qualification handshakes, along with a smile and square look in the eyes, should be required to be handled by every Dem senator - for those athletes who qualify and those who don’t make it.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay...again.
Can mix. Women run extra 10m at finish of their leg.
