Just the opposite. People who aren't distance fans don't know the difference between 12 minutes and 15 minutes but they saw 8 guys in it with 400 to go and then a mad sprint. If 2 guys broke away and ran 12:45, the non fans would have lost interest.
What they saw was a 12.5 lap race where nothing happened for 10+ laps. They were bored out of their minds and probably stopped watching before the end. Oh, and we can all drool over Fisher’s kick but for the casual fan their reference point for his time would be what the women are running for the 400m. The casual fan won’t be impressed by that.
The casual fan isn’t sitting there with a stopwatch timing the last lap.
They didn't review the splits. Running 4 minute pace or 5 minute pace looks the same. A mad sprint is evident to the eye. I don't disagree that many distance fans don't like it but you don't understand casual fans.
I’m not the one who thinks a casual fan is going to sit through 10+ laps of nothing and still be paying attention at the end. They were “changing channels” long before then.

With Cheptegei gone, he’s supposed to be the MAN now in the 5k/10k.
He raced like a wimp. That was weak, and it was disappointing to see him be afraid to lead until the very end.
That meet was so soulless. Just a bunch of paycheck players who didn’t want to be there. GST will never compare to the DL and will be forgotten soon enough.
Was Cheptegei the man in the 5000m? When did he last win an international 5000m?
And Fisher supposed to be the man in the 5000m? Who has been supposed that.
(I agree that Fisher with his improved endurance AND finishing speed is one of the main favorites in the 5000m and perhaps THE main favorite in the 10000m coming Tokyo).
The 5000m time: When you ask runners to run first a 5000m and then with only one rest day a 3000m you must understand that they migh not go 100% in the 5000m.

Nothing happens in the first 10 laps of a DL 5K either. Just a group of dudes running single file at a metronomic pace that means nothing to the casual observer.

Which is why the casual fan doesn’t watch the DL 5k and why the DL has wanted to drop the race in the recent past.
GST is trying to be something new and different in hopes of bringing more attention to the sport and increasing interest from casual fans (or, even better, making completely new fans). The 5k last night did the complete opposite of that. It wasn’t supposed to be a race where winning was the only thing that mattered. It was supposed to be a race where the athletes performed in such a way as to add interest to the meet. None of the guys in the 5k understood this. All last night’s race did was push the 5k event closer to being abandoned in future GST meets.

similarly, with 2 days of rest between heats and finals at the olympics, you can count on roughly a 14:00 5,000 in the heats.

Casual fans sit through hours of nothing happening in baseball and golf.

The “nothing” occurs in downtime between innings or holes. When the “nothing” happens for the majority of the time when the “action” is supposed to be occurring, you have a problem.

The race was terrible but I never blame the runner who does just enough to win. You should blame the rest of the field for not making him work harder.
Everyone is to blame, but someone like Fisher should understand that he has an obligation to make the event (all of it, not 1/12 of it) interesting to the fans who care enough to watch it. When you jog for 11 laps, people turn it off. Ultimately this will cause GST to fold soon enough.

running different paces looks very different.
i others can tell 440 mile from 410 from 350 paces etc.

It’s not so much the scrub kick today. It’s that Grant is beginning to show that he is a liar.
He told Letsun yesterday he expected the pace to stay honest and that there was no way the alternative would happen even though everyone is doubling back. That was a lie.
He insisted to Letsrun after the race today that there is no way that the 3K will go that slow with so many guys with a lot to gain. This is clearly a lie. He said essentially the same thing less than 24 hours ago about the 5k. Why would we believe him now when he told the exact same lie yesterday? He thinks we’re idiots.
He made up every kind of excuse to not run World Cross last year. Those were lies. His lack of participation had nothing to do with preparing for the Olympics and there not being the right incentives. He just didn’t want to get beat. Why not just say that? It would have been refreshing.
He’s lied in countless other interviews too. He usually downplays his goals with this stupid aw shucks false humility. He’s too dishonest to say what he really wants; to crush everyone every single time because he believes he’s the best.
I don’t trust Grant at all. He’s got this slick demeanor with pre rehearsed interview answers with this phony Joe Biden smile. I get the feeling Grant never says one true thing.

Amazing that one can manage to mix Biden or for that matter any US president into this.

So a paced race where everyone one is single file and rabbits peal off like a rocket launch is exciting for the average fan? Every distance race longer than a mile is boring for the average fan until the last couple of laps. To them there was no less nothing happening in this race than any other race. There were lead changes. People moved up or down.
Personally, I found it fascinating. Would someone break? Would they just wait until the last lap? Will they do this in the 3k as well now?
I’m not saying I don’t like a fast race, but the wave-light 3 pacers races get a bit monotonous. The Olympics and WC races far more exciting. IMO.
Can’t stand all of you haters who probably gladly watch the Tour De France for 30 straight days where most of the stages don’t really matter. And boring stages are wrapped up with a sprint.
80 degrees/70 dew point, with another race in 2 days. Maybe we can be excited about racing for a change?
That wasn’t racing. Not by a long shot.
I think you're confusing racing with time trialing. Racing is to see who can get to a certain point first. He did that better than anyone else. The goal of the race is to run faster than everyone else. If everyone else runs slow it doesn't matter. I'm actually impressed with that win. It was championship racing to an extreme. The world championships/olympics have only been 13:20 pace recently with a big kick to get closer to 13:10ish. I generally haven't thought he could kick as well as a lot of people but this year he seems to have a much better kick, not surprising after he ran a 1500m PR indoors and the 3000m indoor record.
