The quote in the title came from the main press conference before the Grand Slam Track debut in Kingston - which took place before this more intimate interview. In this interview, Hocker said, "I don't think the world's best 800 guys can can match (my final 200)."
I think cole hocker will never win another gold and he should consider himself lucky that Jakob went for a poor strategy
I think Cole Hocker had guts and self belief like no other runner in the Olympic final. Kicked on the inside lane in the final 100m and got blocked. Had to completely reset and then kick again to the finish line. After that first block nearly all other athletes would have relinquished and settled for a minor medal.

Cole Hocker won the Olympic gold medal against a stacked field in what most people believe was the greatest 1500m race/final of all time. He's earned the right to make that claim. There's no "if Jakob didn't do that..." It was a race for the ages, and he came out on top, having already been one of the favorites.
As for anyone trying to rebut it by pointing to his Millrose performance, and how he lost to Fisher, I think you've missed the context of the quote and how he's the best "1500m" racer in the world. He's not saying he's the best "distance" racer in the world. Also, give him a break. He did go under the world record in that 3K after all, and (like Jakob in the Olympic 1500,) he was the one who made it more of a race to remember.

What was poor about the strategy of a guy who doesn't have a great kick tried to run the kick out of the kickers. The oldest and most simplistic aspect of running strategy is, "If you don't have a kick, then it's on you to set the pace. And if you have kick, why in the world would you want to do any of the work?"
