Having 5-6 runners under 15 doesn’t mean excitement. Excitement is when you see racing going on.
Currently it’s hard to see any contenders other than Walmsley and Roche despite the high level out there. You need speed in wesr100. Kilian can make the competition far better.
What’s this nonsense about fairness? Fairness is good for the non elite. Otherwise try to bring the best out there. there is some systematic self destruction of the sport. Plus bring excitement the sponsors will follow.
long distance running in general has a problem. Check this which is more for track and long distance, but every word applies to trails.

WESR100 - you guys have an opportunity to create excitement, instead… wake up and give the crowd the real deal.
Fact: Courtney Dauwalter has run faster thank Killian Jornet at the WSER
That said, I respect Killian embracing the process of earning his place at the WSER. I don't think he should be invited simply because he is the greatest. He is a professional, and also a fan of the sport and understands how things work.
Another thread where the average letsrun user who has zero knowledge about trail is making outrageous claims.
Why should they invite the best? It isn’t a world championship. It isn’t a marathon major. The race has been golden ticket (or previous methods of qualifying like montrail cup) + lottery for a decades. Finish top 10 and you’ll get a nice bonus from your sponsor. That’s how the incentives are structured.
Literally every other major trail race (UTMB, Hardrock, etc.) has a qualifying system. No invites. RDs in trail frankly don’t care as much about elite runners. Hardrock isn’t even called a race, it’s an “endurance run.”

This is what stagnation sounds like. There is room to make the sport grow, have more audience. This can only increase sponsorship, which is exactly what elite runners want and need. Who cares what happened for decades. Kilian respects it, but this has nothing to do with it.
Why do you marathon majors invite elite? This wasn’t always the case and they don’t have to. What’s wrong with string competition?
Times are changing, technology and nutrition bringing fast times, these guys if they just wanted to run they wouldn’t care. They want to compete. This is a chicken and egg problem.
Jornet’d time in wesr100 was before the new technology (and he won there). Just check his recent training and races… who knows if he can win, but what the heck…
the fact is that it’s possible to get head to head competition till the last few miles…
I bet that if you ran a survey among the elite who got in or didn’t, everyone would support inviting Kilian.
gawd, Roche is horrible. He's famously known as a horrendous climber and it shows. Walmsley would probably be 4 minutes ahead on any climb, forget about 100 miles.

Send us a link to your Ultrasignup race results, if he's horrible you must have a 99.9% rank.
Kilian is the best climber, also Walmsley is very strong.
Roche just broke Leadville so he isn’t a joker, especially in the more flatty or downhills. Wesr100 is more downhill than up hill. He will show up to challenge the win.
Currently it’s hard to see any contenders other than Walmsley and Roche despite the high level out there. You need speed in wesr100.
It's a different world now that more people are doing all of the right things with nutrition and cooling. I think there is going to be a lead pack of at least 5 runners at the 50 mile. At least one, and possibly two or three of Rod Farvard, Dan Jones, Caleb Olson and Seth Ruhling will still be in the mix for the win after the 70 mile mark. Rod, Dan and Caleb have a better chance of winning than Roche, Ruhling is behind Roche only because he hasn't gone above 100 miles, but he has the ability to shock people on a perfect day.
The five I mentioned above, plus Jim, Killian and Vincent Boulliard are all capable of winning on a good day. Of course, Killian and Vincent aren't in the race yet.

Do you agree that they should invite Kilian (and maybe a couple of others)?

Why would I not want him in the race? Their rules are their business, but I do think having a kid is worth an exemption for someone of his historical greatness.
