bicarb works.
done wrong, it won't work.
in horses well documented, there are a couple of studies amongst the majority that are inconclusive. you can dig into those studies that are inconclusive, and vet the "scientists". remember some of these self appointed fact checker types, they come up with things like, it is physically impossible for a man to run under 4 minutes for the mile, pitchers cannot curve the ball, it is an optical illusion, drugs steroids don't work in sports (hockey players said this) because you'll burn out and get hangovers. i kid you not....
when you have a raft of 143 guys suddenly running 141, and all are on bicarb, and they say it works, well that is pretty good evidence. i don't know who was doing what last year, under the impression that most people in the 8 were bicarbing... stand to be corrected.
it looks like bicarb done right is good to add 2 seconds anaerobic threshold over maybe 1km. and something close to 1 second in the 400, though this seems to be further in the land of speculation.
what should happen in the 400, is a guy that opens in 21.0 200m and comes home in 11.0 plus 13.0 last 100m segments. the bicarb should allow for a 44 flat with the last 100m in 12 flat.
an interesting factoid is that the speed of the runner at the finish near max all the way, is approximately the same for 400, 800, 1500. where nobody is going faster than 12.x 100m pace at the line. on fumes.
