It’s because professionals don’t like running at college meets…. Better opportunities exist now geared toward exactly what they need out of a meet.
This is a very expensive test case…. Mt Sac is a challenge to fill. they’ll make some back on entry fees, but not near enough to cover cost. I’m sure these two have enough favors in their pocket to help some. It does feel a bit vane to think they are saving something.

I'm not particularly arguing the point, but I can't imagine what pros wouldn't have liked about Payton Jordan. The 10k was the premier event, was given the ideal time slot (around 9pm to minimize heat and wind), and to my memory always started on time. There weren't even all that many college kids in the field. What's not to like?
Regardless, Payton Jordan is dead for now as a pro meet whatever the reasons.
This is simply stupid. There is already a large and solid track meet in LA that day - the long standing OXY INV at Occidental College - that could have easily incorpotated these two races into its schedule and likely had a much better audiance in what is a GREAT (and very well liked) facility.
Wind aside, the women's entries could be even more impressive than the field slated for The TEN. Here are some athletes not included in the Sound Running event:
Karissa Schweitzer Doris Lemngole Amy Bunnage Medina Eisa Melknat Wudu Bertukan Welde Hawi Feysa Megan Keith Emily Infeld Fiona O'Keeffe Emily Venters Grace Nawowunda Miriam Chebet Diane Van Es Phoebe Anderson Eilish McColgan Nadia Battocletti Katelyn Tuohy Elly Henes
How about the 3 Ethiopian teens who just crushed the half in 1:07?

It feels a bit weather vane or William Devane?
This event and sport is a joke, ban it or do pay per view Al sal vs goucher 10k

Also, Occidental College doesn't have wind problems like Mt SAC does. That's a big deal when you're trying to hit a standard.
The reason is simple both Kara and Des have been selfish “look at me” athletes their entire careers. This event is just another example. In 3 years this event will not exist as it will lose money and Kara and Des care more about money than they do about saving the sport. I hope everyone tags this thread and looks back on it to see how it truly plays out.
Let me write the statement for them after it fails. We are so sorry that this event wasn’t embraced by all of our wonderful supporters that all know how great we are. Obviously this is not our fault. If the 10k was not able to be saved by two wonderful selfless athletes like ourselves then it was unable to be saved by anyone. Thank you for your continued support and ignoring our past. Kara and Des

The only weird approach is yours. It's sad how much time you've spent thinking about Kara and Des. Tell us how they hurt you.

What if it only lasts one year? They still helped people run an event that is hard to find and allowed athletes to earn some money. Your hangup with them is weird.

This is a classic argument used against popular women athletes, frequently with roots in misogyny. (A similar argument is also frequently used against BIPOC athletes, with roots in racial bias.) So, congrats!
We should have one or both of them on the podcast. I'd love to know what the goal is.
The press release talks about being spurred into action when they learned the Night of the 10,000s was taking a 1 year hiatus, but this is 1 heat per sex with 30 people so it seems different.
The heats at NOT10ks are for club runners of varying levels rather than elites. It works because there's a strong competitive club scene in the UK and it's pretty easy for a lot of amateurs runners to get to London. I don't know if the same is true of the US. So maybe it just makes sense to have elite races to replace lost elite races from NOT10Ks.
Either way, I'm glad to see anyone doing something to put on 10000m races. Opportunities are so limited and no one seems to want to step up other than at national championships, which isn't ideal for chasing a standard.
Hopefully, Goucher and Linden take some of the ideas from NOT10Ks - spectators on the infield and the outer four lanes of the track, have the runners go through the beer tunnel, DJs, alcohol, etc. Most of all, focus on satisfying dedicated track fans. Don't worry about casuals. This is an event that is for track die-hards, so make it somewhere that they want to hang out for an evening. NOT10Ks is so good because you just get to sit around there, drinking, talking running, watching elite racing. It's carefully disorganised if that makes sense
There's a pretty strong club running scene in CA. They could make the heats work. Instead they gave the masses a "virtual race" (aka cash grab). If you're going to do a mass participation race for the 10k, which is a great idea, actually have heats, or if you can't figure out how to make that work, then have a 10k road race that finishes on the track before the meet. Virtual races just tick me off, always.
