We should have one or both of them on the podcast. I'd love to know what the goal is.
The press release talks about being spurred into action when they learned the Night of the 10,000s was taking a 1 year hiatus, but this is 1 heat per sex with 30 people so it seems different.
The meet will take place on May 3rd at Mt. SAC. They’re offering prize money and it will be a bronze-level World Athletics event. Thoughts? I’m a huge fan of the track 10k, so I’m happy to see two influential people in the sport taking action when there have been propositions of dropping the event.
LRC update: Here is the press release on the meet:

The date makes sense. It's 5 weeks after the TEN so anyone who didn't run as fast as they wanted to at the TEN has time to recover and then get a second chance.
The problem is the location. Mt SAC's track often has a strong wind, and you aren't going to run the standard if it's windy. They should have chosen another track.

Wind aside, the women's entries could be even more impressive than the field slated for The TEN. Here are some athletes not included in the Sound Running event:
Karissa Schweitzer Doris Lemngole Amy Bunnage Medina Eisa Melknat Wudu Bertukan Welde Hawi Feysa Megan Keith Emily Infeld Fiona O'Keeffe Emily Venters Grace Nawowunda Miriam Chebet Diane Van Es Phoebe Anderson Eilish McColgan Nadia Battocletti Katelyn Tuohy Elly Henes

The heats at NOT10ks are for club runners of varying levels rather than elites. It works because there's a strong competitive club scene in the UK and it's pretty easy for a lot of amateurs runners to get to London. I don't know if the same is true of the US. So maybe it just makes sense to have elite races to replace lost elite races from NOT10Ks.
Either way, I'm glad to see anyone doing something to put on 10000m races. Opportunities are so limited and no one seems to want to step up other than at national championships, which isn't ideal for chasing a standard.
Hopefully, Goucher and Linden take some of the ideas from NOT10Ks - spectators on the infield and the outer four lanes of the track, have the runners go through the beer tunnel, DJs, alcohol, etc. Most of all, focus on satisfying dedicated track fans. Don't worry about casuals. This is an event that is for track die-hards, so make it somewhere that they want to hang out for an evening. NOT10Ks is so good because you just get to sit around there, drinking, talking running, watching elite racing. It's carefully disorganised if that makes sense
Where in the hell have these two self promoters been hiding? THE TEN and Sound Running have rejuvenated the 10k a few years back.
Please list the pro events that Des and Kara have put on in the past?
This event will fizzle and die within 2 to 3 years.
People shouldn’t try something because they’ve never tried it before? I don’t know exactly what “good for the sport” means, but you and your attitude sure ain’t it. You’ll notice several posters—considering the potential benefits of this race from an athlete’s perspective—have already pointed out the upsides to this event. Maybe find some other sport you’re actually interested in supporting and spare us your crappy attitude.

If they really want to save the track 10k, they should do something like Tracksmith does with the Twilight 5000 series and host a bunch of all comers meets with an elite final heat throughout the country. Maybe Brooks could sponsor that. Part of the problem with the 10,000 is no one trains for it. If you had more amateur runners trying to break 50 (8 minutes pace), 42:30 (7 minute pace) and 40, the event might be more popular. Look at how many runners run 5k road races, 5ks on the track and marathons. Though if they do that they should invest in automated lap counting.

The Ten works because J Serra High School is Small and Intimate. My wife and I met Woody’s mom one year and talked to her the during Woody’s race. Mt. Sac is huge and even if 2 - 3000 people attend it will look line it is poorly attended.
I miss the payton jordan 10k. It used to be APPOINTMENT television. Legendary races from solinksy, rupp, shalane etc back in the good ol’ days. Why does the 10k need its own separate meet to work now?

I miss it too, but it has been at least 6 years since top pros ran at Payton Jordan. I don't know what happened, but I think it's at least in part because Stanford has de-emphasized having pros at the meet. I'd blame Sound Running and The Ten but the pro field at Payton Jordan has dwindled across all events.
So long story short: this meet is needed and is a good thing.
It’s because professionals don’t like running at college meets…. Better opportunities exist now geared toward exactly what they need out of a meet.
This is a very expensive test case…. Mt Sac is a challenge to fill. they’ll make some back on entry fees, but not near enough to cover cost. I’m sure these two have enough favors in their pocket to help some. It does feel a bit vane to think they are saving something.
So Save the 10k is sandwiched five weeks after SoundRunning's The TEN and three weeks before SoundRunning's Track Fest, which also has Olympic/World Championship qualifying pedigree.
Jesse is not going to be happy and I think most pros will stay loyal to SoundRunning
