Hocker runs 12:53 and teare runs 13:01 after blowing up at 4k trying to keep up
Hockers 3k was astounding but we need to remember that he is a great 1500 guy who can run the 800 and 3k very well, we haven’t really seen anything to prove that he can keep up with grant beyond 2 miles
Hocker doesn't run the 800 very well. 1:45.6 is definitely inferior to his 12:58 5000.
True, but he is better at 800m than his pr indicates, because he has run it as an indicator but not as a real target and he felt after running 1:45.6 in Portland, shortly before the Trials last year (when his 1500 pr fell to 3:30), that he was ready to run 1:44 in a set up race. By the Olympics, he had the endurance and speed to potentially go 1:43, if you consider that he could stick at 3:28 pace and kick easily (with the room) past Kerr and Ingebrigtsen, who is superior at 3k and up.

I disagree. He ran under 13 last year. This is the same guy who won Footlocker by 6 seconds. Same guy who pulled off the mile/3K double at NCAA's with only an hour rest and kicking down Teare. I think we see him as a 1500 guy because he has been so good at it, but I think he has range like Jakob and we are just starting to see what he can do at the longer distances.
I think Hocker can definitely break the WR, if he goes after it. I think some of you are forgetting that Grant already had a race in him before that 3k, while it was Hocker's opener. That makes a big difference. The fact that Hocker could open up like that means he is in even better shape than Grant. But there is a good chance they are only trying to hit the standard for Worlds.

You think he can PR by 14 seconds? Indoors?
I thin he was probably in sub 12:50 or lower shape during the Olympics. So PR'ing 6-8 seconds isn't out of the question.
Hocker is allowed to skip but you're right, if he didn't win/medal at the Olympics, 100% he should be going to USA's and Worlds. At the same time I understand the 1500m elite guys Kessler, Nuguse, Hocker skipping indoor worlds and focusing on outdoor, one mediocre day and they can miss the world team easily. No excuse for Teare skipping his chance at making a world teams, when he's at risk of never making one ever again.
Just like any other runner with at least Teare’s talent at 1500/5000m, he’ll probably never move to the Steeple.
there have most certainly been far better 1500/5000 talents than teare in the steeple. Girma's the easiest one to start with. Even a prime Jager put into super shoes/spikes has a strong chance of producing better times.
There are always going to be exceptions, but either a fear of being injured or finding the water jump to be unappealing, most 1500/5000m runners avoid the steeple. Jager was by far the most talented American to run it, which is why he has the AR and won 2 medals.
The steeple is also the least prestigious distance race. Rooks ran a tremendous race at the Olympics, but among Americans, all people talk about on LRC, are Hocker, Nuguse and Fisher.

well, we can say the same thing about Jakob. Same thing about Kerr. Fact is, none of those guys has even gone under 1:45 and have proven to be more strength based than speed based.

I’ll take a fast time over indoor track championships. Running in the 12:40s would be a tremendous confidence builder for outdoors, and not so much for a sit and kick for a medal. I would have to look it up to know who was on the world team last year.
What if Teare is pacing Hocker to try and beat Fisher's WR? Weren't they supposed to be running last week at Valentine BU? Maybe they skipped it to see Fisher's time and try to beat it (somewhat similar to what Jakob did to Nuguse, except the part where he didn't plan it on purpose a week later).
There is something about having a kick that is very separate from being a good 800 runner. Beamish, Kincaid, Chelimo are all guys with tremendous kicks but no strong PRs, let alone 800 times. Nordas is another one who had an insane kick at 2023 worlds. Centro 2016.
Having a great 800 doesn't hurt, but it certainly isn't a prerequisite for a big kick.

Not to mention Hocker was running 30 MPW only 5 years ago, his aerobic base is still underdeveloped compared to some of these other guys. He clearly took a big step up in endurance this winter with his 3000m, I would not be shocked to see him challenge 12:50

When they were both at Oregon, every race was a kick to the finish. Neither one wants to lose to other, and it will be every man for himself.
The other thing is, what if Hocker held off Fisher and the times were flipped? If Fisher still breaks the 5K WR at BU, are we even questioning if Hocker could?

Not only would we question it, Hocker will absolutely not break Fisher’s indoor WR. If 1500/5000m and 5/10 guys are even at 3000m, the 5/10 runner will have a significant advantage for 5000m. If they were even over both distances, Hocker would also have a shot at Fisher’s 10000m AR.
Why, so they can beat a b tier field in china at worlds? What does that get them, you need to realize that you are talking about an olympic gold medalist.
