I remember this was heavily debated last year after some crazy workout Nico completed that was CLEARLY indicative of him running low 3:50s for a mile but a bunch of folks on the boards weren’t having it. Guess he proved them wrong yet again.
3:33.79 with the conversion. I don’t know if I’d call Nico a 10K guy though. His best event might be the 5,000 though it’s unclear.
Depends on what you mean by best event. I'm sure he could run a nasty 5k, and be one of the best in the country, but I think he's got a way better chance at making the 10k team than the 5k team. Wolfe beat him at NCAAs last year in the 5k, and arguably Blanks was better than Wolfe last year by the time the Olympics rolled around. You're right that it's unclear though, it's hard to know when he hasn't raced a 5k in so long.

I agree with this. 10K with this kind of underside is much more appealing than at 5K these days.
3:50 for a 5K/10K runner is super impressive. I’ll admit I was a little disappointed in the 3K yesterday, but the 3:50 more than made up for yesterday’s performance.
I think it’s time the letsrun community totally ignores obvious trolls or insane comments. Its time guys. Let the kids be at the kids table. Those who want to talk running simply dont respond, dont even give a thumbs down. Just ignore.
So this thread has gone two pages and no one said whether Coach Smith threw his watch this time? You guys aren't on the ball today.
He threw it again. We measured the throw of course and it was about 10 feet farther than yesterday. He has already announced that he will be competing for Texas on a throwing scholarship next year(redshirting this season obv).
notice how many guys run this type of time and in the coming days, ramp up.
these world records a plenty, skew the novice brains. it's a one off season. and it's not typical at all to open at your best. nor do you want to. you want a solid result, and continue specific training and continue sharpening. if it is early and you run "too fast". you can back off on the intense speed and do some mile repeats and steady 8 milers. for a small block, and know you don't need too much red line speed work to sharpen to peak.
My sense is that his aerobic strength right now is a bit behind last year, whereas his mile is about right, considering that he ran an altitude-adjusted 3:48 mile last year and that he ran 7:39 the day before this 3:50. Note that last year he beat Samuel in the 10k and was probably in 7:30 3k shape indoors, and this year Samuel outkicked him in an underdistance race for Samuel, who could run only 3:57 in the mile in his double. Nico also did a shorter version of the 1k repeats than Bosley that is up on video, sharpening at the end instead of doing 12x1k, which suggested to me that he had a bit of an injury or illness delaying some of his winter buildup. But 7:39/3:50 is still a great opening double and I expect he'll be in sub-27 shape for the ten.
Also very close to Fisher's 3:33.9, although I don't know which is better off the top of my head.

Outstanding job by Young. 3:50.89 for a 5k/10k guy is superb. No one can question his low end capability. I see him as being closer to a 5k guy than a 10k guy, but he covers both extremely well. Still only 22+ years old. A big talent.
Great job by Aidan McCarthy of Cal Poly. 3:52.83. He is coached by a guy from my area and I know they are very pleased. 1:46.25 back in 2023 and injured in 2024 after a 3:56 opener. Now this. Expecting very good things from Aidan at 1500m this year.
