It actually is not. Do you know how many sub 9 minute hs 2 milers we have had in the U.S?? The bar is definetly being raised in track n field. Better coaching, equipment , no more overacing.

It probably helped that Gerry was running the longer distances crazy fast. They might not have completed however they definitely heard about the work each other were doing and it was probably fuel.

They actually did. Shortly after Ryun were the only other American high school sub-4s until Webb in 2001. But I'd agree that 23 seconds under the American record is more humbling than inspiring.
