He ran the same exact time indoors he ran in what, May of of last year, outdoors? And it’s February. He ran 7:17 that season. 3:26 that season. You shouldn’t bet your money “all day” against a 7:17 guy who just opened his indoor season at 3:45.1.

Yes sports change. But a 400m track doesn’t. Our sport was different than other sports, a direct connection to the past. Other sports are entertaining, have you watched cycling? Times do not matter and never have, technological innovation doesn’t get in the way of the story being told. It’s a competition. Our sport is so connected accurate times, times run over 400m laps. Always consistent, measured, accurate. it’s gone.
This is all laughable and ridiculous. So outdoor tracks today are no longer 400m? That’s news to a lot of people.

You shouldn't be saying absolutely not, he's in the best shape we've ever seen him in. He can definitely challenge Jakob without a doubt.
Rewatch the Paris 5k final and see how easily Jakob passes a 12:36 guy in Gebrhiwet on the bell lap. Rewatch the Eugene 2022 race and see how easily Jakob takes down the strongest 5k field ever assembled, consisting of multiple World and Olympic medalists and the world record holder, a 12:35 guy and two-time Olympic champion. It is not practically possible, for Grant or anyone else, to beat a guy with 3:26 speed and 7:17 strength in a championship 5k. He’s like peak Farah, if Farah was also in world record shape at every distance he contested.

This is awful. Carbon plates have ruined everything. All we had was historical significance. That was the beauty of our sport, the racing has honestly never been super exciting…. Comparing times and athletes across generations, we had that. It was stolen from us.

Your making a mistake that is rampant on Let's Run. Your assuming the future based on the past. You said essentially that nobody can be Jakob in a Championship 5K just because nobody ever has. (giggle). However, a new year and a new championship and Fischer is demonstrating he is a real threat.
Now personally, I put Jakob as the favorite until he loses one of these. But don't say that Fischer CANNOT beat him because just maybe he can this year.

Komen was 4s faster outdoors - at best I could see Jakob barely breaking Fisher's record and running 7:21 indoors.

I’m all for hype about our guy but all of this is totally unreasonable. If you think Jakob wouldn’t have blown the doors off both Grant and Cole in the last 200 of that 3k last week I don’t know what to tell you.

I really hope Grant becomes world champ at 10000 but he has 0% chance of defeating Jakob at 5000, and I stand by that
I agree that Jakob should still be favored over Grant in the 5,000, but I think saying Grant has 0% chance of winning is far too extreme. People might have given 0% chance to these things ever happening, but they all happened:

People here have been doubting Grant Fisher for a long time, and he keeps proving them wrong. After seeing him break two world records and outkick Cole Hocker over the last week, I'm a believer.
Yeah, there is definitely a chance. You can get an illness just before the race. For example Noah Lyles in the Olympic 200m.
This one is a lot less impressive to me than his 3k. The 5k indoor record was always soft. It's an event that doesn't exist outside of the US - in fact, it almost doesn't exist outside of Boston. All of the top 100 5k indoor times last year were ran on that track. It's essentially a cheat code for athletes from rich countries.
Personally, I don't think WA should allow indoor marks for the 5k to be used as qualifying times for the outdoor 5k championships. The indoor and outdoor events are completely different and the 5k only exists as a championship event outdoors.
The synthetic 400m track surfaces have also changed. The 60's era Tartan track developed by 3M is absolutely not the same as modern track surfaces.
The track surface in Bislett/Oslo and Monaco are not the same, despite them being about the same age, because Bislett has entirely different requirements for drainage.

Fisher adds to the list of elites whose PRs happened indoors, in spite of the vast majority (and most important) races being outdoors. It's not believable. And those of us who understand the mechanical advantage know why.
If the indoor season was taken as seriously as outdoor - e.g., have the olympics and OT there, have Diamond League with all its prizes indoors - all the indoor world records from 1500 up would be faster than outdoors.
