I'm bumping this thread because I didn't see this when it was being regularly posted in. I'm glad someone reposted my info about all the weird stuff around the Brooks Beasts over the years from the Houser thread but I've got another that is a bit more conspiracy-y than others.
It's about Nick Symmonds from 2015. Anyone who was following the sport knows Nick was coming back from injury in 2014, he was 31 years old, and had joined the Brooks Beast after his 2013 silver medal at worlds. Nick had been the man in the US 800 for the better part of a decade at this point and it was fair to assume he'd be done. This seemed to be confirmed when he opened up with 1:49 and then only improved to 1:46 before USAs. But then he ran a season's best in each round to make the final! Nick was back and had clearly been chewing his Run Gum (another new project for him in 2014) as he ended up winning in 1:44 and threw up his trademarked temporary tattoos to show off his new company.
So this was awesome as a fan of Nick. He was back baby! US title number 6 over Eric Sowinski and his training partner Cas Loxsom. But... he didn't go to worlds! And this is where speculation begins because officially he didn't go to worlds because he said he had had issues with USATF when he was wearing Brooks gear instead of the team issued Nike gear. Par for Nick, he made a big deal about this and said his experience at World Indoors in 2014 informed this decision and that he would not be competing in Beijing. It all worked out as in Nick's place, a young college kid from Akron named Clayton Murphy got some good international experience that definitely helped him race the Olympics the next year and nab a Bronze medal!
But Nick's explanation didn't sit well with me at the time and still doesn't. Maybe someone has more info but at the time I assumed Nick knew he was not in shape to race at worlds and had kind of won USAs as a fluke, so he wanted to save himself from getting rocked at the world stage. However, now looking back I'm wondering if there was something else: glowing? serious injury? deeper conflict than he went into with USATF? This ended up being Nick's last US title and really his last notable performance as he was injured for the 2016 trials and ran 2017 USAs as farewell tour, only hitting 1:51 in his final race. I'm curious what others think about this.
