I was not specifically making a claim for or against "taking over Gaza" (though to be clear, I am against that).

I was just pointing out that perhaps Trump doesn't really want to take it over either. He just puts those insane ideas on the table because it forces other people like Egypt and Jordan to completely recalibrate their offers. Nobody can just go with the status quo if one side is negotiating from a totally new position.

Trump, love him or hate him, is not offering the same "terms and conditions" of any other modern leader. He is forcing everyone to come to the table with completely new offers. Can this blow up in our faces? Yes? Can it ruin countless lives in Gaza, maybe? I am against it, but I understand the motivation to "try something totally new."

And because DJT will never feel the consequences himself, he doesn't care if it ends up being a humanitarian or financial nightmare. Nothing that happens 10 years from now can ever matter to Trump, for obvious reasons...

Why do people still freak out every time Trump "proposes" some ridiculous nonsense? He'll forget about this in a day or two or else explain how he had a great talk with Gaza leaders and blah blah blah and his supporters will pretend it was just a negotiating tactic or one of their other standard excuses. The only things he's been able to get done, really, is the abortion stuff and that was only because a President with same-party Senate can push through any justice he wants and then other people (the justices) get the real work done. Does anyone really think the Gazans won't still be in Gaza a year from now? Of course they'll be there.

If Trump really did play twelve dimensional chess, this could be a good move to get Hamas to give up control over Gaza in exchange for a treaty with Israel to end the war (there is currently only a cease fire). There are plenty of Palestinians who are tired of Hamas and would be happy to see someone else run Gaza and an end to the war with Israel.

But Trump probably doesn't even know how the horsey moves on a chess board and is actually serious about taking over Gaza. While the Saudis and others squawk publicly about Trump's plans, privately, they cannot wait for the opportunity to make money with a massive resort in Gaza. There has always been a limit to what can be done in Dubai, Qatar and Jeddah. Western resorts have to be given special exceptions to Sharia law, which are not popular with the average Muslim and very unpopular with conservative Muslims. And the Persian Gulf's weather is decent for a few months in the winter, but is unbearable the rest of the year. Weather along the Mediterranean is much better and Gaza under US control would not have any issues with Sharia law or local conservative Muslims. It would also be a gateway to Israel annexing the West Bank and Gaza to once again bring together the ancient territories of Judea and Samaria.

Quite honestly, if Gaza was peaceful it has potential. Look at Israel. The place was a poor, loosely populated, forgotten, god forsaken back land with malaria swamps less than a century ago. It has been developed and cultivated and now has the highest per capita income in the surrounding region (by over a factor of 10). If people stop firing rockets and actually try to live peacefully, establish commerce and utilize their resources, they could thrive. Trump is looking at this as a developer. The places is in rubble. You basically need to start from scratch (demo what’s left of the buildings, recycle the concrete and rebar, get rid of all the unexplored munitions, upgrade the infrastructure and start building). You can’t accomplish this without investors and investors are going to stay away so long as people are still firing rockets, kidnapping people, etc. You don’t need to kick people entirely out, but you definitely need to isolate certain areas until you can ensure security, repair the infrastructure and re-inhabit the areas.
