The game has changed. Forget about history. This is a new game. There will be more and more 1:43, 3.28, 7:30 guys. And of course Webb was a 1:43 guy who would probably be running close to 7:30 today.
He might be too tough on himself.
He's faster than:
Coe 7:54
Cram 7:43
Ovett 7:41
Webb 7:39
Hocker 7:39
Centrowitz Jr 7:40
The tools are in the tool box. Start focusing on THE WIN🏆🏆🏆!!
Pre-supershoes 7:30 was good
It’s pointless to act like times are the same before shoe technology.
Personally, I think he did not run a smart race. He did all the work to bridge that gap and when the kicks started with 200 to go he had nothing left. Had he sat more like in 3rd or 4th and let the others close the gap he may have had something left. Just my thoughts.
what a dumb thing to say. according to this idea, only around 50 human beings in the entirety of human history are or have been "fast." prior to 1989, not a single human being was ever "fast."
As Peach Pit pointed out up above, it's a good thing that he thinks like this. To be a global medalist/champion, you have to believe in these absolutes. When you're in the top 99.999% of human potential in a sport, you don't care about the guy even a quarter second behind you anymore, you're constantly chasing the summit. It's all relative as well, times today on average are much faster than 35+ years ago because of better nutrition, training science, and shoe tech. So, you could make an argument that 7:35-40 guys in the '80s would be sub 7:30 men in today's age.
If the guy a quarter second back is a better kicker, hell yeah, your potential global medalist/champion should care. Chasing the summit didn’t work out well for Ingebrigtsen in Paris.
Hocker wasn’t thrilled not winning but wasn’t as upset either when he ran 8:05. Kessler has to take something positive like Hocker did. But I get it, Hobbs feels he is better than the guys in front of him and wants to start his season well like most world champions do.
I know Hobbs has been tweaking his training regimen throughout the years. Started with traditional Ron Warhurst training, the next year double threshold, then he got rid of the long run Olympic year. I know in recent podcasts he said he wanted to run sub 7:30/13:00 for that next step to be right there in the 1500 with the big 4. Imo opinion this is a good start for him and he can build from here. A lot of work ahead of him before USA outdoors and Tokyo.
7:30 is not fast for an elite 3k, it's just not fast
