Both are rock-star performances. But I can't bring myself to downplay the performance of a US 22 year old who just ran a #3 all time in the indoor mile.
Farkin is racing the Millrose mile next week. That will be a good indicator for how fast BU really is. If Farken breaks 3:50 next week, all the talk about how BU is a super track (which I think it is) and that Strand’s run isn’t legit because of that, will be null.
Wow, Kerr’s comment about soft American milers from 2 years ago looks sillier by the day. We have at least 5 guys who have a legit shot to win a global medal IF they can make the team, and maybe the list will grow by this summer. Strand looked completely fresh at the end of that run, like he could have run another lap or two. Yes, super shoes and a super track, but regardless, that was a super run.

It was just a silly comment. If you are a 3:34/3:52 guy you do not boss races, which Kerr seemed to want American B-level guys like Prakel/Wynne/Engels/Gregorek to do. You try to place high and worry about the win not the time. Since Kerr said it more talented guys emerged and they unsurprisingly run faster and can hang with faster guys.

Crazy how all coaches discovered the internet in 2021 and everybody started getting faster everywhere, seemingly regardless of their training ethos.
Like, Sizzle is probably right, all coaches, around the world, all simultaneously and independently started leveraging the internet in the same year (2021). It had nothing to do with the footwear that was released at that time.
Will run nowhere that fast outdoors. Just a BU performance folks.
I think most agree that BU is only marginally faster than an outdoor track in good conditions. Running slightly worse than this performance outdoors would still mean breaking the collegiate 1500m record and running just north of 3:30, which I’d imagine Ethan would be have to be fairly satisfied with.

Perhaps what is really going on is that during COVID when there were no competitions, some coaches experimented in training with things they didn't try before. Since there were no races, there were no consequences if it didn't work out. Then they found some things that work amazingly well and now they've adapted their programs around their discoveries. Without COVID they wouldn't have taken the risk to try something new.
I'm not saying shoes are not a factor though, they definitely are. But I think the gains from the shoes were already getting baked in.
Curious. What might prep Gerry Lindgren have run on that track in those shoes?? Remember, he ran an 8:40 indoor two mile on an old 11 laps per mile track in San Francisco his senior year.
