Yes, the men's 1500 will be better and so will the men's 3000. But this race will be crazy if Bell, Hull, and the Ethiopian - Melknat Wudu - decide to make it honest. They are all super fast and Cranny just seems like she can do all kinds of things, so she'll be good too.
BTW, I do think Valby will run faster than 8:43 (which would equal Tuohy's mark in the mile). I am almost 100% confident she'll be under 8:40.
Obviously, you do still think about this because you’re posting on this thread. By denigrating one of America’s best young talents with baseless and slanderous comments you are displaying your ill founded prejudice.
I was never a "Valby vs. Tuohy" combatant and I don't follow women's track as closely as men's, but I will admit that the psychos who won't stop talking about Valby have made me less of a fan of hers.
Valby "psychos?" There are none. The only psychos are the Tuohy ones. Case in point: Valby gets 2nd at the Olympic Trials and it results in a 10-page thread. Valby runs 14:52 to SMASH the collegiate record and it gets a 5-page thread. Valby runs 30:50 to OBLITERATE the NCAA record by 28 seconds and it gets ... 2 pages. Tuohy runs a fairly pedestrian 4:25 (1.5 seconds slower than two years ago) and it gets a 12-page thread. Just making a ridiculous statement like that makes you sound like you are one of them.
I perused the thread you're referring to. A big reason that it is so long is due to the usual suspects that are denigrating Tuohy.
I like both runners and quite frankly I think that the over-the-top "fan stuff" is weird. Conversely, bashing on them and denigrating them is also weird.
I'm a fan of running and like to see good performances regardless of who it is. The NC State runner I have been watching closely lately is Grace Hartman. She has a better than average chance of taking down Tuohy's 5000 records at NC State.
Frankly, I don't see any obsession or creepiness here, though I'm sure it's out there in the world. I would rate the field this way:
1. Hull 3:50 and a 2k world best. An enormous step up and I expect another medal this year outdoors. Mid to low 8:20s.
2. Bell an enormous step up relatively late in age. Should be very tough
3. Wudu, didn't look her up but no Ethiopian is going to be running this who cannot challenge for 2nd.
4. Cranny, great year last year but coaching switches don't always work out quickly. We'll get a sense for how well Cornfield does. Working with the men's group certainly helped Woody Kincaid indoors a couple years ago. A sub-8:30 again would be a nice start.
5. Valby, good chance to see how well her professional transition is going. A real shame she hasn't run any xc like in previous years, which is probably her best medium. I predict mid to low 8:30s.
Denigrate means to attack someone's reputation. Did somebody accuse her of having an affair? Did they accuse her of cheating? Tuohy fans are so sensitive that others are not permitted to give perspective on her running when that is precisely what this site was designed for.

Denigration is what happens to Wiley and Valby.
Touche but I am fully aware of what the definition of "denigrate" is.
Yes, Tuohy has been accused of cheating. Valby & Wiley have also been accused of cheating. That said, you group "Tuohy fans" all together. There are some overzealous fans but it's those fans that you're referring to, not the entirety of her fans. It's the same for fans of Wiley & Valby. A few seem to represent the whole and that is not fair, either. Me? I'm not a "fan" of any particular athlete. I just like to see good performances. Grown men, who more than likely compose the largest demographic of this website, being gushing "fanboys" of young women athletes, any athlete, is just a weird phenomena to me.
I happen to really dislike the Philadelphia Eagles. A big part of the reason I do not like them is because of some of their fans. I realize, though, that those fans do not represent all of their fans. Any team in any sport and any athlete in any sport has fans that are overzealous and rightly or wrongly, fans of other teams or athletes always seem to put all of the fans into one pot and view them the same way.
I've said it in other threads and I'll mention it again, while this website is very popular it only represents a fraction of the fans of the sport. Don't feel as if what you're seeing here is a true representation of all fans.

Thread length might not be the best metric here. A lot of the Tuohy threads that drag on are full of comments about her being a washed up has-been because she didn't PR. She takes a lot of unwarranted heat on this site just because she has been consistently fast for so long. I do not see as many of those types of posts about Valby. Case in point - there is another active thread on Tuohy right now where someone just said she should give it up and pass the torch to the younger runners (she is 22) because she ran a 4:25 mile in her season opener. Earlier in this very thread Valby is hailed as a young runner that is the future. They are the same age. Tuohy has just been a top talent for a much longer time. They both have exciting potential, and I hope we get to enjoy a lot of good racing between them in the future.

Not because of anything she has done, but honestly just because I feel like there are too many weirdos who care way too much about her "career" or whatever. Give her some space for goodness sake.
Plus we have so many other runners who are already legit world-class right now, the fawning over her potential is kind of off-putting.
I mean honestly, there is no chance she is winning this race, yet people want the focus to be on her. She is not running away from these women in a 3km and she isn't out-kicking them either.
BTW, as a runner from the PNW, I am going with Duck alum, Jess Hull for the win.
That's interesting. I support both Valby and Tuohy, but if they are racing each other, I'll root for Valby mainly because of astro's incessant attacks on Valby.
Re: "Plus we have so many other runners who are already legit world-class right now, the fawning over her potential is kind of off-putting": I'll point out that our U.S. distance running women did not fare so well at the Olympics last year. Not a single medal from the women's 800 to marathon. Our highest finish in any women's distance running event was 7th. Valby gives me hope for LA 2028.
Honest question, why do you not feel the same way toward the people who behave similarly toward Tuohy?
These two have become like political parties. You can't tolerate bizarre behavior of people advocating for one emotionally, and then turn a blind eye toward the other.
As far as I see it, both sides are far too emotionally invested.
