Who runs PRs in the middle of January? And at the elite level why would you want to?
Traditionally, Tuohy does. Six of her nine best lifetime performances were in the winter on indoor tracks.
2 in December, 2 in January, 2 in February, 2 in May, 1 in July
Moving the goalposts does not make this a great race. Tuohy was attending classes full time, studying, living the busy life of a college student in 2023. She now has no responsibilities except to train as a pro. She has more time to train, sleep, and do all of the little things that pros have time to do. She also spent considerable time at altitude last year, something she had never done before.
Bottom line is, Tuohy January 2025 has every advantage possible over Tuohy January 2023 and yet she ran slower on a newly resurfaced track that is allegedly faster (some people love to play the "Valby's time doesn't count - she ran at BU" card - it works both ways). Her time was a step up from 2024 when she times that would have gotten her crushed by numerous college runners, but it is by no means impressive. It was not a good sign, especially considering her history of her best performances being in winter.
Tuohy 2023 was using a racing plan that aimed for peak in Nov, March and early June. 2925 Tuohy is aiming for a fitness peak in late June.
worrying about and OK rust buster in Jan is stupid. If she doesn’t run faster towards the end of indoors and can’t get down to 14:50 outdoors, then we can start worrying about if she has stalled out. If she pulls a Cranny and drops 30s we will look at everything a bit differently.
The time from that last ncaa track season through the trials was disappointing. I don’t know the details about why. Sometimes those bad periods continue (see Brazier). Other times they are just a speed bump. We will have a lot better guesses in 6 months
I don't understand my professional runners are hurt so often.
Tom Brady and LeBron James played or play much more dangerous sports and managed to stay healthy.
Lots of down votes but no answers to a legitimate question. Football and basketball are extremely physical yet these 2 are playing into their 40s without missing many games let alone full seasons.
They are sports that aren’t very athletically demanding. There were dozens of guys who were more athletic QBs than Brady. And these days there are dozens of dudes that are more athletic than the current LeBron. But as they are low athletism sports you can get by having more game IQ and making the right moves. Compare that to track and the difficulty that a guy who has lost 6s of mile time has. Tactics don’t let a 3:55 guy beat a 3:49 one.
In 2023 she was being pulled along by faster runners. Here she soloed. Stupid comparison.
Also, you are expecting a doping trajectory from a clean athlete. (Valby's time, like her teammate Hilda's sudden ability to run 14:50 (LOLLL) is suspect for another reason). I think this is a doping sport, and trying to compete with dopers clean is impossible. That doping invading the ncaa through NIL and internationalization is another subject. But the incentive situation means Katelyn cannot pull a Shelby Houlihan or join teams famous for 25 year old plus athletes suddenly running national class times. (LOLLL-like anyone is fooled except for a few yahoo here). She has something to lose, including an NCAA coaching career. Personally I think trying to compete clean in a doping sport is squandering a much better pro career. But maybe lie in wait for a few years and then pull a Jessica Hull. :)
Huh? Tuohy has been one of the mist suspicious runners for many years. She seems to get sick or injured whenever there is a threat of testing. Valby is the absolute perfect physique for a distance runner. Why would you be suspicious of her?

You are in no way the official adjudicator of who is and who isn’t “clean” in the sport, and the fact that you take on such self-proclaimed importance to come onto this forum and over on YouTube under one of your many other handles, all the representing yourself as a Tuohy insider makes you (and her by association) all the more repulsive.
LOLLL. I have stated my reasons, and everyone here knows I am right. (No we add the physiological "explanation"). But if I say them, even about a paid pro, I get instabanned.
Anyway, we will absolutely know when KT goes all in or not for pro accolades. Then again this board pretends Hull suddenly ran 4:50 clean and that Bell had a decade of latent potential or that Holihan was "undertrained" or Chemusto was benefiting from a new training group.

Anyone that has more than superficial knowledge of this sport, in which astro claims any average runner with access to ‘chemistry’ can become a world beater, by default puts into that camp.
So what to do? Give it the old mom-and-pop and apple pie facade to try and slip in under the radar.
Trying to justify and absolve any appearance of wrongdoing, while claiming an athlete will forever be at the top if they were one good in high school is stupidly ignoring the fact that high schoolers can do peptide enhancers, too, and high school phenom athletes with records like the one Quincy Wilson is breaking, or those coached by Kersee, came out of New York as high school phenoms.

Need we mention Mary Cain, who Alberto through shade back, when he mentioned her father’s provided ‘supplements’, back when the heat started being directed his way in that case?

Hypocrites like you think unless their favorite is not “all in”, you know, like “really all in”, (whatever that means in their mind…like maybe a few peptides here and there…it’s only ‘protein powder’, so that isn’t “all in” like something like EPO ), then they are free to slander other better athletes, whether or not those athletes as well aren’t “all in”.

Well, I for one certainly think she did great yesterday. It was a really good sign of her fitness (I’m sure she’s not actually training for a fast mile specifically).
Her 3,000m @ Millrose in two weeks will REALLY give us an indication of where she is towards her 5,000m fitness.
In the meantime, very happy to see her get her first professional win, and in a respectable time.
4:25 is a good rust-buster. It doesn't indicate that she's ahead of her college form. It does indicate that she's healthy, which gives her a shot to make teams this year. To do so, she'll have to be in a lot better form, but she has time.

As a non-combatant in the perpetual "Letsrun Valby vs. Tuohy Wars" (I want them to both do great), I can honestly say I was very impressed how smooth that win looked. I never for one second thought Tuohy was in trouble. She looked like a pro, going through the drill, in a perfectly paced and run rust-buster. Nice work! I can't wait to see how she progresses this season!
p.s. I am also very impressed how that Oregon Duck girl (Wilma Nielsen of Sweden) was able to tuck in and hang on. She was so strong as well. Top-ten all-time NCAA with a 4:25.
