Yup! Such a big deal for a professional runner to barely beat a college runner. 👍
You’re so observant!
If you recall, back in 2023, at Millrose, professional women barely beat TUOHY in their race. (Tuohy was a collegian).
I think the majority of “real track and field fans”, realize that this is a good indication that Tuohy is on the right-track and and ready to race fast.
She’ll improve.
Running slower than she did two years ago in college is on the right track? 🤨

I know I started this thread about Katelyn Tuohy’s 2025 debut. BUT, I have to admit, I’m even MORE impressed with this!!!

Nielsen is impressive. Keep in mind though, that even though she is only a Jr, she is a year older than Tuohy... a lot of foreign athletes in the NCAA are older collegians.

Does Tuohy not do any training at altitude? She talked about Henes coming back from Flagstaff to Raleigh, and I got the impression Tuohy herself has been in Raleigh the entire fall/winter. Does anyone know?

She said in the citius interview that they talked about "going for the win vs running fast" in her first competitive run of the year. She also talked about how the deeper field (like Monson etc) in 2023 helped make her get a better time.
You clearly won't be swayed by any of these points but:
1. It is incredibly unlikely she peaked in her first competition of the season.
2. Deeper field will push pace so that will help (but could cost her a win too)
3. Racing is running to win. To think she went 100% for time is pretty naive.
4. I think she held back first couple of laps and then had to hold off the Duck for the rest of the race. Definitely, not going to get her a PB as a tactic. For that matter, she said she thought the pacers were in the race until the first one dropped. If you want to criticize Touhy then her not knowing about pacers is a reasonable criticism.
I think even the biggest Touhy fan acknowledges she can lose any race. It is just weird to see other people saying her winning a race means effectively she failed because she did not pb.
No. It was definitely success. But it just wasn't impressive. Expectations a few years ago were for her to make the 2024 team and be the top American by now. Instead, we are happy that she was able to edge out a college runner.
The issue KT has is that she is a naturally talented athlete in a very dirty sport where the people she is competing with are dirty. But it is very tricky for her to go with the flow because unlike the others she has something to lose, having built a following since high school. For these others, what do they have to lose? They can play the game.
Alright, before the haters start attacking. Yes, she had a “not so great” Professional debut year in 2024. But, as most of us know, she was injured. She still showed up and tried (and even ran a 15:07 5,000m, which is close to her previous PR).
With that being said, let’s not forget her collegiate accomplishments, listed here:
Collegiate achievements 1500 meters indoor – 4:06.49+ (New York, NY 2023) NCAA record Mile indoor – 4:24.26 (New York, NY 2023) NCAA record 3000 meters indoor – 8:35.20 (New York, NY 2023) NCAA record 3000 meters indoor U20 – 8:54.18 (Boston, MA 2021) NU20R 5000 meters: 15:03.12 (Walnut, CA 2023) NCAA record

I ALMOST gave you a thumbs up.
But then you had to go negative. SO I just kept it neutral.

Who runs PRs in the middle of January? And at the elite level why would you want to?
