The video was posted on March 22, 2022. That means his comments were largely based on the 2021 season, and to be fair, that wasn't a good year for us. Hocker was our only guy to make the Tokyo Olympic final, and he was the only American man to be in the top 30 on the 2021 world's fastest time list. Our 2nd-fastest guy, Craig Engels, was tied for 33rd.
The value of looking at that video now is highlighting how far U.S. 1500m running went from one Olympic year to the next. We went from having only one man in the Tokyo Olympic final - who finished 6th - to finishing 1-3-5 just three years later in Paris. On the year's fastest times list, we went from having our 2nd-fastest guy at #33 in 2021 to putting 3 in the top 7 and having our 7th-fastest guy at #33 in 2024. It's been a fantastic turnaround for USA 1500m running!
Well, he wasn't wrong - video from. What? 2022, based on. 2021 Olypics?
And now USA got a lot better. I think he's pretty fair on a lot of what he says, and because he dares to have an opinion, it's occasionally incorrect, hea good value.
I remember when he gave this interview he wasn't wrong but us Mid-distance was in the generational transition from Centro and others. To now with the big 3 - Hocker, Yared, Hobbs along with a bunch of young talented college kids

It was just a take that aged like milk. There wasn’t any inherent reason the non-blue chip guys (Prakel, Wynne, Holt, heck Engels) were any softer than B teamers from other countries. They just are 3:32-3:35 guys maximally who don’t want to be sacrificial lambs in the Portland Track Fest. Expecting them to command US races and run like Olli Hoare is silly.

If we score the Olympic 1500m like an XC race with 2 per country, it is USA 4, NOR 11, GB 12, NED 15, KEN 23.
Yep, and I remember thinking when we got past the semis that it was kinda cool how it worked out, almost exactly six countries with two each, only messed up in USA having three and Italy one. Almost worked out perfectly like a six-team invitational. Rare to see a field line up like that in a global final.
I don't like Kerr as much as the next guy but this is a 2 year old video bro
It’s crazy the Teare was the second person he mentioned after hocker as people he excluded from the soft label. I stopped listening after that so not sure who else he brought up. But Teare being brought up as the 2nd best us miler and nobody started laughing shows how much things can change in a couple of years

Teare is still pulling races from the front against B fields. He did it post-Trials to multiple European fields. What Kerr missed is that it is not some sign of not being soft, it just probably means you are better than your competitors. To say B tier guys are soft cuz they don’t run the Stewy McSweyn playbook is silly.

Teare went on to win the U.S. 1500m championship 3 months after that video was posted.

Exactly. It’s insane he won a us championship in the 1500m (or any event). He’s borderline irrelevant at this point. I unfollowed him awhile ago on instagram. If he is able to put together some decent races, I leave the possibility open to follow him again
