My the time this guys are in 3rd year in college they will have run:
Danny Mercado under 29 10k
Diego Mercado under 29 10k
Didn't Wheating win the National Junior Olympic 5k during XC too?
But where are they now?
For some reason the high mileage guys in HS do great in college and than are done shortly after. There is no jump to the next level. That said they perform very well in college which is what they are paid to do.
Predict each PR's for their freshman year:
KK: 14:10 3:47
AJ: 13:45 3:46
Dettmens: 14:20-30's
Faster mexican: 14:20
Other mexican: 14:45
Isaac Stouneberg: 14:15
Other Oregon Kid: 1:49
yea twins are fine, what is wrong with them? Instead of one good runner you have two. The Torres brothers, the Hausers, the O'Neill girls, the Trotters. Maybe twins help push each other cause they are very similar in ability and have a close bond. Oregon will have three sets of twins next year. Are they All identical? They already have the Trujillo brothers (identical), the Mercados (identical), and the Dettmans. Are they identical twins too?
Crazy!
Yes, they are identical. I, uh, have some experience with that. LOL.
>> What do you mean?
I have little clue how well anyone will develop; I just have faith that their training will serve them well when they step up to college running.
Danny and Diego Mercado ran under 15 as sophomores, and are quite obviously faster now.
Acosta will not ru 13:45 next year.
Stoutenberg is demonstrably the fastest of them at 8k (aka what they'll race as collegiates) right now.
Maybe Andy Powell can weigh in and tell the letsrun community who will survive under Lannana, it seemed to have worked out great for him.
Who cares about Oregon? They still only have the second best recruting class.
AJ and his "Nation". throwing the "johnny damon sucks" t-shirt into the Boston Indoor Games crowd after holding it up like a banner during his back stretch pre-race jog around the track???? i almosted vomited on the spot!
Aj sounds like he could be the next "pre" he has the right attitude, and afterall, he is going to oregon. His attitude sounds alot like Pre's, kind of cocky, and not afraid to show it.
dettmans may thrive on the system since it is a high mileage program like the one they were in. however, if im correct i think their high school program was pretty intense. the college program is surely intense and i think that if they are mentally set and can deal emotionally with another 4 years of intense training then yea they will continue their success. if they feel as if they are going to burn out like many people say than yes they will burn out. running is a tough sport mentally, especially at the collegiate level. i think they are probably the most prepared coming from a team with a tradition in excellence. i hate it when people say that they think someones going to do something without having any facts or without even knowing them, especially nay-saying and extreme promoting, it's so fake.
Can we start talking about Oregon once they've actually done someting? They didn't even finish in the top three in the Pac 10 Conference. I know Vin Lanana knows what he's doing; let's just shut up about the Ducks until they at least make it to nationals.
Andy Powell was ruined by his HS coach. Don''t blame Vin for his failure.
I dont think Sage had to much of a problem transitioning from York's program to Vin's.
I havn't decided if high mileage in HS is an indication of lack of future success. If anything, I would think those kids with those fast times no matter how many miles they ran as youngsters would have laid down the foundation for a great opportunity in the marathon immedialtely after college.
I think many of those types fail because of their psychological issues rather than the training they did in HS. They will likely compete very well as Freshman and Sophomores and then they will notice gradually that others who might have been undertrained in HS catch up to them and surpass them, while they simultaneously hit a plateou.
They were used to outworking people and easily standing out in HS but there are more talented kids that just get rolling. It can be frustrating and hard to deal with a lot of kids get bummed out and lose their motivation.
Salazar ran 90 mpw in HS, Sage the same and I think he had a nice career. If he had done less in HS he would havn't had the opportunities he got and would have gone to a less competitive program. If he matched his marks at Stanford and gone to Illinois instead people might be saying he was a college legend. But only the few have the talent to break through to the 3:35-13:20 level. And he got close.
An 8:50 kid in HS who ran 100 miles a week, that can get down to 13:40 in college has a great background for the marathon. But many turn sour on the sport when they see other kids who might have been undertrained run 13:30 and this affects them negatively and they comprehend their commitment.
Its not because they trained too much in HS.
Damn, three sets of twins on UO's team next season. Is that a record?
Chris Cummings will run under 13:40 next outdoor season for them ....should be a good lift for there xc program as well...
It seems to me like since Vin Lananna is at Oregon now, every high school running star who wants to be good in the future is going to go to where he is because he has the history of making runners better than they were when they came to him. Hiring Lananna was deffinately a move in the right direction for Oregon. I think all of those recruits can do well in the future at Oregon under Lananna's system. The only thing that could hurt them is too much ego. A lot of those guys are some of the best in the nation, making it very competitive atmosphere on that team, and that could be a hazard, because if guys start pushing themselves too hard they could hurt themselves and their team.
Acosta has good led speed, while all those other recruits rely more on good distance running strength. If Acosta shaves that ugly goat and cuts his hair I bet he could excell. I think Acosta, Diego Mercado, and Justin Harbor are the more talented runners out of all of those recruits. I think the Mercado's have raced too much in the recent past, but they're probably learning that lesson right now.
