hahaha gtfo. aren't you guys the same guys that crapped on Colin Sahlman after only 1 track season and 2 XC seasons. give these kids some time, they just had fantastic races considering its december. the real question is where is aaron sahlman
Where was Colon Sahlman yesterday? Let me guess injured. I hope not. It’s seems normal in NAU land

Hopefully C Sahlman can get healthy under smith and turn pro. Staying at NAU might now hurt him more them help him with their assistant taking the head job. Word is NAU is having a hard time convincing kids to run for Cornfield
Sounds counter intuitive but the "game" at BU in Dec is to take your xc fitness and try to hit a massive PR in 5k races that are basically time trials... I think every heat had a pacer and tactics be damned. At the top of the food chain, try to get a time that will get you to Indoor Nats (there are no regional meets for indoor Nats - strictly top 24(? ) times I believe- correct me if I'm wrong) - The rest of the year races (like conferences) will likely be tactical and times won't be the focus as much.
Guys will now shut down for whatever and pick it back up in a week or so and build toward Feb. including speed training that was relatively minimal in XC compared to track speed
As an aside - next time in Boston (Jan/Feb) the same guys that ran the 5k here, especially the miler types - Strand/Martin etc they will be firing away at mile times and that will be the race with a million heats once these guys get speed training under their belts - the 5k will be a much smaller affair.

Where was Colin Sahlman? I don't know. But I can tell you where he wasn't. He wasn't at some insignificant december 7th track meet blowing his load 7 months before outdoor nationals. He has a chance to be an NCAA champion this year, at least amongst the favorites, after how he looked last season.
It's interesting to see the difference in body type between Nico and the twins. Nico is built like a rail, completely narrow through the hips. The twins are stockier and shorter. They have the engine but not the body. They've already achieved so much with just that, but to be the best of the best you need both.
Grant Fischer and Nick Symonds would like a word to go against this.
Grant is not stocky and has much longer legs than the twins. Nick is a 800m runner. (but nick is a pretty interesting case given long legs are almost a requirement for 800)

Or another sidelined Smith athlete. Welcome to the Doctor Smith way

There is a saying within the NCAA and Pro running community. If you have a high IQ you don’t run for Mike Smith. He creates a cult atmosphere that is unhealthy. If you have ever listened to the Young twins they sound very intelligent and would not mix well with Mike Smith. I’m not talking along the bad academics at NAU but more about the type of athlete that can’t think for himself. Coaches and athletes have to be on the same wavelength and Coach Smith needs a less intelligent athlete to coach well.
Remember hearing in the past that Charles Hicks and Ky Robinson used to design their own training plan at Stanford. We can assume that the standard and quality of training was higher under Brosnan at NP than at Stanford just by looking at the times. Lets not forget that Cole Sprout was one of the most impressive HS runners ever, and he hasn't been able to get anywhere near the likes of Nico (where would he be if he went to NAU?). The twins were objectively quicker than Nico in HS also. Nico and Colin developed extremely well at NAU, Aaron not so much, but I don't think he takes it seriously anyways. I think L&L would be significantly quicker if they committed to NAU. I'm guessing here, but the twins seem more like the "frat" type, I imagine they are also enjoying college life (maybe a bit too much), the workload at Stanford is also higher. When you couple that with training that isn't stimulating improvement, you get a plateau.
Also just want to say that you guys basing this difference entirely on 'talent' are stupid.
This is an absurd post to me.
When you coach athletes at the level of Hicks and Robinson you design a training plan around them. To say they designed their own training plan is just to take away credit from Ricardo. They likely had massive input in their plans with Ricardo and obviously their plans worked. Any interview I watched with Charles Hicks while at Stanford had him giving credit to Ricardo. I doubt the quality of training for Stanford vs NP is an issue. Insane comparison.
Cole Sprout - 3:56, 7:43, 13:24, 27:42, 4 x all american, 4th place in 2022 NCAA 10k
While he's obviously struggled the last couple years, to act like these aren't great marks by him just because he hasn't been as good as Nico Young is ridiculous. 13:30 this past weekend is a good step forward again for him. There are far more high school phenoms that will never sniff what Sprout had already done years ago.
While I don't know the Young twins personally, I can't imagine the "frat" lifestyle is why they aren't like their older brother. They've built an entire brand around their lives as runners. Obviously they have to dedicate much more time to school at Stanford than they would NAU. They've made progress this year and I bet they'll only continue to improve. They don't have to reach Nico's level to make Stanford the right decision.

Agreed. Pretty much all the Stanford training is and has been on Strava. Charles and Ky weren't doing anything significantly different than the guys are now. The only noticeable difference this cross country season was that Ricardo replaced the epic 10-mile dead-flat tempo runs at Baylands with a version also at Baylands that incorporates some hills. And added hill repeats in a lot of those sessions. A few double-threshold days too if I remember correctly, but not that often. Nationals didn't pan out for whatever reason -- and that may be Ricardo's fault -- but the idea that Ky and Charles were doing their own training is ridiculous.
As for Sprout, he has been up and down for 5 years. Not sure what the issue is. Some of it has been injury, but he has been maddeningly inconsistent. But, big picture, I view him as one of those guys who came out of an elite, high-mileage HS program and that he was already closer to his ceiling than a lot of guys are. Maybe the same is true of Lex and Leo, though they are sophs so we'll see. Sure, Nico also came out of an elite program, but sometimes guys keep improving and sometimes they don't. Could be based entirely on talent, or training, or injuries, or any combo.

he's a miler. aside from visiting the Cheers bar, why would he fly all the way to Boston to run a 3000 or 5000 when he won't run either of those during the season.
This is brozzie fault. He ran them into the ground in HS. Had them running 5ks and 10ks. Instead of 1m and 2m. Just another calamity of the gone wrong brosnan experiment.

0/10
Neither Lex, Leo, Colin, or Nico ran a single 10k in high school.
Leo, Colin, and Nico ran exactly one track 5k each, in all of high school.
Lex ran one track 5k in his junior year and three his senior year.
